OK some "newbie" questions... beginner tri athlete (runner previously)- have done reasonably well in a couple tri's/duo's last summer but I'm getting a little more serious now...I don't know where else to ask....

1) ok men, are we supposed to wear anything under our tri shorts? I've never seen anything advertised but I just want to be sure!

2) In the market for a wetsuit... I'm also a SCUBA diver, any reason i can't use a tri wetsuit for SCUBA diving (ie will it hold up to more abuse, high pressure, etc). Trying to kill two birds here since i could use a 5mm SCUBA suit anyway

3) My wife took noticed me spending a fair amount of time riding my new TT bike, looked at the seat, and promptly voiced concerns her Urologist (Dr) friend told her about extended time on bikes leading to permanent nerve demage resulting in ahem... performance issues in other pursuits... is this for real? She's very supportive of me otherwise... but i can't get this one off my mind!

That's it for now but i know I'll have more... thanks for your help in advance!

First off, welcome! You;ve found a great place to get your questions answered.

1. Nope, nothing there, just the shorts. Just be wary of when they get worn a little thin.

2. Can't help here, I'm sure someone else can chime in on this one.

3. There's a lot of conflicting evidence and opinion. My feeling is that is you have a good saddle and a good bike fit you won't have any problems.

1. go commando

2. tri wetsuits are designed to give you bouyancy. if you swim in one you pop to the surface. scuba wetsuits ,and I could be wrong here, are designed for diving no bouyancy.

3. yeah think so. but if your bike and seat are set up right it shouldn't be a problem if you feel your boys going numb time to get out of the saddle for a little bit and get some blood flowing.

1) Nope, butt (haha, just had to do it) be aware that some tri shorts are thin and in the right sun light conditions can become see through on the back side...

2) Not 100% sure, they use the same material. When we scuba dive we have to add weights to stay down so the bouyancy thing is kind of foggy here. I haven't scuba dived in a long time so I really don't know. I would suggest going to a couple of wetsuit vendor sites and asking them the question.

3) Good question, a lot of conflicting material out there. I was actually looking at buying possibly a new saddle because of this, got 2 IM's on the schedule this year. I have been looking at the Sella SMP http://www.sellesmp.com/en/default.htm

They have an article What the Physicians say related to the saddle

1. commando
2.Tri suits are designed to give greater range of motion and My experience with scuba suits is that they are made for more abuse.
3.Yes you can damage your ability to come to attention...a seat with a cutout is best, but you'll have to shop for one that fits you right.Couple that with a good bike fit and you should be ok. The new Sella as mentioned above is getting alot of good press (no pun intended:) )

2. I dive too and wouldn't recommend using a tri wetsuit for scuba. Tri wetsuits fit very tight and are more buoyant than dive suits--meaning you'd have to wear more weight and would have less comfort on the surface and possibly at depth--they might mess with your positioning too since the legs especially have added buoyancy material compared to a standard dive suit. Also, I wouldn't want to risk possibly tearing a tri wetsuit from donning scuba gear, brushing up against plants, rocks, fishhooks, or metal underwater. I wear a cheap 3mm longsuit for most warmer water diving and it's nice to not worry about the abuse the suit goes through. For cold stuff, I'd want at least a 7mm suit anyway so a tri suit really woudn't be of much use there. (I haven't gone to dry suit yet b/c I don't do enough cold water dives to justify) .

1) I wear running briefs underneath my trishorts. I like the support.
2) a Tri wetsuit and Scuba wetsuit are both made of Neophrene. The tri wetsuit is made with varting thicknesses of material to optimize your buoyancy and flexibility at the joints.
3) Compression can cause issues for men and women. As previously stated get a good bike fit and a saddle you feel comfortable on for a while. The Selle strikes look pretty good and I want to test one out.

Nothing to it, but to do it

1. Can't help you there

2. I don't think it's a good idea. Tri suits are designed to fit very tight, and they have a slick layer on the outside that cuts drag and lets you go fast. I don't think you'd be comfortable scuba diving in one. Also, you wouldn't want to tear the slick outer layer because then your tri suit isn't so aquadynamic, scuba suits are used much more roughly. Tri suits are expensive, at least twice as much as a dive suit of the same thickness, they're designed for totally different things.

3. Can't help you there either, other than to note that most local bike shops will let you "test drive" saddles. That's how I found one that was very comfortable. There are plenty of saddles with various size/shape cutouts to take pressure off of the important bits. My hubby and many friends are cyclists and we all managed to have children. 'Nuff said ;)

JRH, New London is is Southern Chester County, PA, right about where MD, DE and PA meet, near Newark, DE (ps any clubs around...haven't found any nearby yet...?)

Thanks for the info everyone, looks like I won't take my tri suit diving, and I'll definitely look into the other seat options.

Thanks again

I ride with First State Velo Sport. Lots of PA members and club rides up in the Newark, Wilmginton area. I think you'd be closer to most of them than I am.

fsvsonline.com

The site hasn't been updated in a while, but all the ride info and contact info is still good.

1) Just some chaomis cream
2) Don't know of a wetsuit that is cross functional for both
3) Good seat and fit - then fine tune it. Should be able to be comfortable on the long rides.

3. If you are not currently having issues with numbness, tingling, pain, or lack of "activity" in the time shortly after a ride (just in case you've ever, uh, checked?) you should be fine for now. THere is no controversy in this area, decreased blood flow and decreased nerve conduction can cause problems for the team. But it won't happen instantly without you noticing anything. If you are currently comfortabel, no worries. Don't sit for too long without standing a bit. Even standing for 30 seconds every 5-10 minutes or so will rejuvenate blood flow and keep things comfy.

THere is also the endless mountains tri (sprint) north of scranton, as well as the Wilke's Barre tri (oly) that starts at Harvey's Lake. Both good, tough courses.
