I feel the need, the need for speed!
Thats pretty fast brotha.... It's funny your heart rate was only at 161 AT. Mine is 150 or so on the normal ride that I can do for just about an infinite time. When I am pushing it I have seen it go up to 180's and even the 190's when before my lungs explode...
I usually train at 148 HR when doing base. Since my last VO2 test, we came up with the 161 number for my anerobic threshold, so thats the upper limit before I start going anerobic. As a confirmation test, when I ran the Phoenix marathon last week, I averaged 162 and was able, barley, to hold that for 2:59:33, so the number for me is dead on. Usually AT is defined as a HR pace on the run you can hold for a marathon.
My max HR is 181, I'm 38, so all my HR numbers will be lower then the younglings ;).

Oh ok I was thinking your LT not AT. My AT is about where your's is....
Red,
you look right on track really kill it at AZ. If you don't mind saying, do have a goal time set? IS this your first IM? I can't recall if you've stated whether or not you've done one before.
One last question, how'd you get so damn fast on the bike?!?

I will have spent about 11 months in training for IMAZ. My goal time is anything under 10 hours, even if it's just one second. This will be my first IM, I did the SOMA Half Ironman this past October. I only started biking this past year when I started training for my first triathlon last May. I think my advantage on the bike is that I have rwally good power to wieght ratio. I'm very lean and relatively small (5'10", 155) and have alway had big quads for my size.

Well good stuff. Thanks for the details. Good luck in your build up to AZ and keep us informed. It's cool to see the numbers that the people on here put up.
Red is a great example of how max HR means NOTHING in triathlon and how important AT is and of course LT. I get tired of people trying to brag about how high their max HR is, it is the sure sign of a newbie whenever you see someone talking about their max HR.
Great training info Red and best of luck this season, I have no doubt you will be extremely successful and I look forward to some good race reports.

Just a quick training update for IMAZ. I have finally, after doing 8 months of base training, 3 Olympic races, one Half Ironman, and a Marathon, have graduated to speed work. My training schedule, 80 some odd days out from my A race, now is loaded with longer duration and more intervals. Yesterday was a great example of a bike workout designed to push AT with active recovery. I rode a 15min warm up followed by 5 x 5mile intervals pushing up to my AT HR of 161, with 1 mile spin/recovery in between. When I was finished, I rode another 36 min in the 140's, which is a normal base HR. The entire ride took 1:57:00 and I covered 47.3 miles @ 22.3 mph. I haven't gone that fast since SOMA. It felt great to push hard and I am looking forward to doing my 400m track workout later this week. I have also gone to swimming 4times per week and have upped my yardage to 15000. Yesterday I got 4300 yards done in 1:00:07.
