Hey all,

In a effort to train a bit more im biking to college on days when im not in uniform (dress blues + bike = bad) but I need a backpack to carry all my crud in. I need something with decent capacity and also something that won't sway around on me when trying to really push it. A built in camelback thing would be nice but not a requirement. I'm not a big fan of messenger bags but would be willing to try them provided i get some good feedback on a specific one. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

One thing to consider: avoid packs with an internal frame that will push against your neck or helmet. I just bought a nice Kelty pack, but can't bike with it on because the frame bumps my helmet. I've got a nice REI pack that I mostly use, and it's expandable. I'd love to buy another one but of course they stopped making that particular model and changed the design!

Concur with the internal frame comments above.

How far are you riding? I was riding 5 miles each way and a messanger bag/book bag worked fine for me.

North face and Oakley both make a couple of packs that may fit your needs.....

Lisa (vollenda) is a big fan of this Land's End backpack complete with lights to make you more visible to drivers.

I've mostly just used regular backpacks... some jansport ones even have the chest strap to help keep it in place.

I have a Timbuk2 messenger bag and a Desoto Transition pack. Would highly recommend both.

How bout the larger camelbacks like the HAWG with 801 CU Inches of capacity?

Or the Trailblazer w/ 1300+ CUI?

Both have waist and sternum straps to reduce sway and movement...

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

well my decision was made in a pretty funny ending. For my first ever tri-event I needed a USAT membership (well it wasn't required just knocked a heck of a lot off the entry fee), and so I choose a silver membership with a TimBuk2 pack lol, figured it was $100 which wasn't much less then the cost of the pack on its own, so good deal =). Thanks for all your inputs though =)
