New triathlete in Utah - a beautiful biking state!
Welcome to the site. A lot of your questions will be answered if you just continue checking these threads.
Having gone to BYU, I'm pretty familiar with your area. If I still lived there I'd try riding around Timp - go up Provo Canyon and turn left and head up toward Sundance. Ride all the way up and around the Alpine Loop and down American Fork Canyon. It's a beautiful ride, but it probably won't be passable until at least April or May. If you want something flatter (and longer), ride around Utah Lake. Also, try hooking up with these guys: http://utahvalleycycling.com/
Good luck!
If you start at the mouth of provo canyon, you can do a steady slight climb of 5-6 miles to vivian park on a pretty trail that goes past Bridalveil falls, from vivian park you can ride another 5-6 miles on some steep, but not deadly uphill back behind the mountains a little bit, which has no traffic at all. Then you turn around and come back. While that is only maybe 20 miles or so, its a fun workout, without a lot of traffic.
You could also, rather than coming back, head on through to Heber City, which is 20 more miles, and from there, there are lots of options. You can go up i-40 to Park City, which is a pretty mean climb, or else go up to Francis, where the Jordanelle triathlon is held. Or go all the way to Salt Lake City if you're looking for really long rides.
I'd be interested in finding some other fun rides though. If you go west, you can go by the steel plant, or wahtever that is there in Orem by the lake, and ride back there, its pretty nice, and even do 100 mile loop around the lake. Though that one might be better with a group, a guy was killed by a diesel truck not long ago on that road.
Don't do what I did in my first tri, I actually dried off in T1 before getting on the bike(and I was asking everyone, where do you change?) A good piece of newbie advice would be to get a pair of tri shorts to do the whole race in. They have a thin pad which dries quickly and is hardly noticable on the run. For your first tri, the swim can be a disaster and you can feel like you are in a lobster tank battling wiith your species. For the swim, start out all the way to the side, the distance you'll have to make up is minimal but you won't get kicked or hit in the head with an arm(yes this does happen.) Also, don't get caught up in the moment by swimming really hard. You'll get out of breath and could panic if you aren't used to swimming in open water. Just relax and get into a good stroke rhythm and you'll do fine.

HEY!
I am new to trifuel.com and the triathlon world and I am loving it. I have always been a been mtn biker but as of recent a road biker and tri-goer. I am registered for a team tri in march and then my first scheduled individual tri in july. If anyone has any advice, I am all ears! Anything you would have wished you would have done starting out??? buying a bike - swim training - nutrition - training plans - apparel - shoes ?? all that fun stuff.
Also, has anyone biked in utah (orem-ish area). I am looking for some fun long rides around here that don't have tons of traffic.
Thanks!!
