Hi all

i am looking into "investing" in a wetsuit and was hoping to draw on the vast Triuel knowledge, and get some tips on buying a wetsuit.
mainly on fit, brands, good bad experiences, any other little know tips in getting the right wetsuit.

My main motivations are that I'm now consistently hitting the podium, but in all my years in triathlon I have never used a wetsuit even in iron man's because i was always able to come from behind in the bike and run. I'm hoping a wettie might bridge the 2 min gap to the lead pack. Also I'm tired of freezing my nuts off treading water at the start line!

Thanks

Try them on, each brand fits differently. Get a full suit over a sleeveless for added warmth in cooler water and less resistance.

TRI wetsuits have differing thicknesses of neoprene and treatments to make them slick in the water. The differing thicknesses are usually set to place you in a "downhill" position with the legs having the thickest (5MM) neoprene. This can make kicking feel different (especially if you are an effective kicker).

Ensure you lube the areas that can chafe (neck, underarms, back of knees, wrists or you'll be sorry (especially in salt water)

Finally - mediocre/average swimmers will see the greatest improvement from the bouyancy and les drag and will have more reductions in swim time, for advanced swimmers you should see less ( you're already in the proper position)

You going to Port Macquarie this year?

thanks vanjames. I will be at port, but I'm not competing I'm acting as a support crew for my virgin ironman training buddies this year!

I'll be there. Watch for the sunburnt Canadian. Depending on your timing for buying a suit you should try them on at the swims during the IM week.

My advice is if you can, find a shop or Tri expo where you can tri some different suits on. They all fit differently and it's worth getting a good fit if you have the opportunity.

My second piece of advice is don't try them on on a 105 degree day in August. That's what I did and I think I lost 10 pounds of sweat and by the 3rd or 4th one, I was so sticky I couldn't get them on or off. :D
