Early morning swim
A bowl of multi-grain cheerios with no milk works for me. I eat it between 4:45 and 5:00 and am in the pool around an hour later. I also have a cup of black coffee. I do the same for runs under an hour. If they are longer I add half an energy bar and some sports drink.
Maybe cut down on the sports drink beforehand and take it with you to hydrate as needed?
Ensure - it's a meal drink - 250 calories. It is very easy on the stomach. I'll use one or two of those before a long hard workout. They are also my pre-race meal for IM or a HIM.

I'll go with RV, Ensure is great and always on my wake-up menu for a dark-o-thirty workout. I'll have some plain yogurt, 6-8oz, mix in a little museli and a banana. Throw in a black cup of coffee and I'm ready for a swim, long bike or run.
On the mornings when I cant' drag my butt out of bed early enough I'll do an Ensure, banana and a GU.
Test out different things and see what works best for you. Start out light and see what you can add as you go along.

The following works well for me:cottage cheese and maybe a banana, whole wheat bread with peanut butter, whole wheat power bar. The trick is to keep it to small portions before the swim.
I guess my question would be, how far do you swim in the morning?
If i know it is a light day of 1000 yds., maybe a bananna and a small glass of OJ or skim milk.
If it is a longer swim, say around 2000 yds., I need something extra and usually do a bananna, and two slices of whole wheat bread with natural chunky peanut butter (I much prefer Jiff though), and OJ.
I will typically eat not less than 45 minutes before my workout.
Then after the work out, its a bowl of oatmeal, an apple, and then a cliff bar mid morning (10ish).
I'm typically swimming anywhere between 530am and 630 am.
Morning all!
Thanks for the prompt replies.
I have sensitive bowels in the am so wheat grass or muesli might over do the fibre in the morning (I just read the peeing while doing an IM thread so I figured this site can handle the personal info :D).
I swim with a squad and we do between 900metres (984yards) and 1.2km (1312yards) warm ups. A swim set can range from doing doing 200m, 100m, 150m, 50m sets or 10x50m for 3 sets. The sessions are devised by a coach so I let him do all the thinking.
The Endura supp I take is a magnesium rehydration formular with about 90calories and I take that just because you dont get a lot of time to hydrate in the pool.
Ive tried PowerBars but still burp them up in the water. Wholemeal bread is another Ive tried but maybe I burp that up too - maybe Im just a loud digester. Ill try a little protein and carb shake (10/30 mix???) with 200ml of water and see how that goes down. Is that enough you think?

You could try a mini meal before going to bed, that may be enough to carry you through. Try to choose something you know will works in your system and that wont create any early a.m. GI issues once you get going.
Again, you're probably going to have to experiment a little.

I don't start fueling until 15 min into a workout whether is S B or R, and then I use Hammer powder mixes only. I was eating a bowl of oatmeal, 1/2 banana, milk and PB before a race and that was causing serious gut problems. That led me to using an all-liquid/paste diet during training and races and it really seems to be working for me. Anything substantial is too painful for me. As Cayman said, if you're eating correctly, you should have enough in your reserves to get you through an early morning swim workout. You have to try things out and see what works for you.

Normally I eat cereal+milk, yogurt+cereal+fruit, otmeal etc.

Well, I had a wholegrain roll 45mins before and that was good. I always do a good swim workout anyway. Unless I am seriously fatigued from a long ride the day before, I find that I can really push a swim workout.
Tomorrow though I will try just taking something in a drink bottle (like some glucose polymers) and fuel during the workout. Lets see how that goes. I dont have gatorade or anything like that just a carbohydrate mix made by International Protein (with no protein).
Thanks for your input.

I like to have some Raisin Toast with Jam on it before a morning workout.. I find that if I have milk it swishes around in my stomach and isn't generally good.. But the Fruit toast and jam does the trick perfect!
Prunes with hot cider vinegar and cottage cheese.
Just kidding....Diced up banana and granola in a bowl w/a tablespoon or two of melted peanut butter on top. My stomach is pretty sensitive to eating/exercise, but this combo has never been an issue.
Greatness is only achieved by those who perpetually raise the expectations of themselves to the point where it ruins their life.
My saturay workouts are usually 4000yds, about an hour before i had 6oz yogurt 4oz of water and 2 scoops of hammer whey followed by 8 oz of heed for pre hydration.
i swim about 4200 yards on MWF during the week. i eat a clif bar about an hour to 45 minutes before the workout with a 12 oz bottle of water and on cold mornings i substitute the water for a coffee cup of sugar free apple cider. i stay away from the caffeine and coffee before workouts.
As you can see, this is different for everybody. Sports Nutrition is usually different for each individual. The key is getting in a 3:1 ratio of carbs to protein. For some people, eating peanut butter before a workout is a quick and easy way to get calories and energy, but for some it doesn't digest properly. Everyone is so unique. Try a few of these snack ideas and see what works for your body.
Your dinner the night before, I feel, is more important on your morning performance than what you eat before your workout. You need some food in the morning, but it is so crucial what you eat the night before. Brown rice, veggies, a protein source is a great energy booster for the next day.
Good luck!

It's funny you say that because I am currently eating brown rice, chicken and salad because I know tomorrow morning is a 430am start and all that is coming with me to training is gatorade.
Thanks for all the input.

Hi there, I know I havent posted recently but as always I would like to say that this site has a whole world of information that I have ploughed through.
I am wondering what others eat or dont eat before a swim. I am swimming from 530-7am and am taking the Endura electrolyte supp in one water bottle and thats it. Its hard to stomach anything before a swim as I just end up burbing in the water and miss a breath.
I get up at 430 as it is and really dont want to get up earlier. I want to perform well in the swim but I find doing it on empty just doesnt cut it. Maybe thats more mental than anything.
What do others think?
