Substitue workouts for running

About 4 weeks ago I hurt my achilles on a recovery run. Went to the doctor and found out it was a stress fracture where the achilles meets the heel bone. Was told to take it easy for 2 weeks but that I could keep biking and swimming, but no running.

I've been putting in extra time on the bike and keeping up in the pool but feel my running, which is my weakest, is really what I should be working on. I tried running 20 minutes a couple of times the last few days as the pain is gone but after about 20 miutes it starts to creep back so I quit.

I was up to about 30+ miles a week and was just getting to where I could run 8 minute miles comfortably on end which is fast for me and without going above my LT. So I had planned on really keeping focused on the run for December-February, but now I've lost half that time!

Since I can't run, what are some good activities that one could do to help improve run fitness? I've been able to lift weights (everthing but calf raises) and my gym has eliptical trainers that I can do without pain (but I don't ever feel like I get a good workout on these). So, any ideas on what kind of things I could be doing to help not lose too much of what running base I had would be appreciated.

(The only plus out of this is I've put in alot more time on the bike trainers and now swim three times a week instead of two. With the extra swimming I've improved to where I can do several 500 yd swims in a row in under 6:30 whereas a month ago I would average 7:15 or so. So at least that's a good thing.

You could try pool running. I'll bet you could get a pretty good "run" workout doing that.

I can understand your disappointment at not being able to train like you'd hoped this month, but I think you'll be surprised at how quickly your running fitness bounces back IF you rest this thing properly.

you'd need a vest to keep afloat but it's no impact and supposedly a brutual workout. be patient w/ your injury no need rush back and get reinjured again.

My doc did suggest that. He has run several marathons so it is nice to have a doc that is familiar with running injuries but also knows that since I'm training for an IM that I need to keep up some semblance of workout.

You have lots of time before your race - I would follow the Dr's advice - no running (pool running ok) - sub the runs with cycling and swimming as you are doing and get back at it when it is properly healed.

All the suggestions about pool running are right on.
If you are able to do the elliptical it is a good workout that is close to running, and uses many of your running muscles.

Let it heal, and keep up with your swim and bike and the pool running and/or elliptical:D

I will remind everyone of THE shinning example of water running.
Joan Benoit had knee surgery and was unable to run on the road for weeks leading up to the first womens Olympic Marathon in 1984.
She was able to pool run only. She finally set foot to road just a few days before she won what has been considered the most important race in woman's running history.
Pretty good evidence that it works.

Check out an AquaJogger. I had a few nasty stress fractures while competing in college CC and Track. This provided a hell of a workout and will help build whatever mental toughness your lacking. Take a look at http://aquajogger.com/default.htm
Hope you recover quickly.

I want to suggest an opposing view.
The injury is a result of overuse, the rest may be the best thing you could do.
You will maintain your cardio fitness with the biking and swimming, so rest those dogs!
Chances are pretty good that when you return to running you will be fresher than ever and ready to resume training pretty much where you left off. Not flat out the first run of course.

Far more triathletes suffer from overuse injuries than from being undertrained for a race.

You didn't get fit enough to run 30kms in two weeks and it won't go away in two weeks.

Good luck,

Thanks for all the input. I will look into the water running. As for the elipticals, I was unsure of them because I never feel like it's as hard of a workout as a good run or bike. As for overuse, it's funny how it came in the middle of a recovery week and after having built up to some good runs and a 30+ mile a week average. I actually think it's cause I knew it was gonna be an easy run so I possibly didn't stretch enough.

Well the concensus seems to be to try deepwater aquajogging, and after reading the info on the website (thanks flaniganrj) I will give it a whirl. Luckily the YMCA where I do my lunchtime swimming has aquajogging belts and the arm dumbells, so I will try substituting some of them for my runs and see how it goes.
