Problems with my Cateye Double Wireless

Got a new Cateye Double wireless comp. for Christmas and installed it Friday before a Sat. ride. Two problems:
1) I mounted the cadence/speed sensor on the chain stay as per the instructions, however on my bike(Cervelo Duel) the chain stay tube does not run straight into the bottom bracket, it kinda"juts" in. This causes the speed magnet to have to be mounted about 2-3 inches away from the end of the spoke. Therefore, my distance reading after the ride was almost 4 miles shorter than what I actually rode. Obviously the cadence sensor side is fine as cadence is cadence, but I was wondering if anyone has any idea on how to mount the sensor to get a more acurate reading? Anyone had problem like this?

2) The new comp. and my polar HRM were also crossing each other up and I spent a lot of time riding at 225-250 bpm, avereraging 183 bpm at only14mph. I noticed that the speed reading on hte comp. would read around 18mph, then all of a sudden it would read 3 mph. Could these two problems be related (i.e. could my speed sensors/cadence sensor actually be mounted correctly and it was the HRM that was throwing the numbers off? Any help is appreciated.

1) The speed pickup on the Cateye sensor rotates such that you should be able to move it closer to the spokes to get it closer to the magnet. Loosen the screw on the end, then rotate the pickup.

If you still cannot get it to work, then you might want to try a stronger magnet. I have had real good success with the Mavic magnet, which is stronger than the stock magnet supplied with the Cateye DW.

2) I know the interference issue has been discussed on the forum before, so you might want to do a search. There should be a way to switch the frequency that the Cateye is using. I don't remember how off the top of my head, but I know somebody posted instructions a while back.

It shouldn't matter where you mount the magnet for the speed sensor. One rotation is one rotation no matter what part of the spoke it reads from. I can think of two things that might throw off your distance reading:

1. The wheel size isn't set right on the computer (the computer might think you have 650c bike)

2. The interference caused the computer to stop reading the rotations (also would explain the 3 mph reading)

Hope you figure out how to switch the frequency!

I went back and checked the size and it was correct. I think I'll do the search on how to switch frequencies. I feel the interference was probably to blame. Thanks for the replies.

I would guess that since your magnet is "2 to 3 inches" away from the sensor, your computer is not picking up every wheel rotation. This would make sense since your ride came up short on distance read vs. actual distance travelled.

If you think the interference from your HR monitor is throwing things off, then go for a ride without your HR monitor and see if there is any affect on your bike computer.

Another option is to call Cateye to see what they have to say. I have never had any interference issues with my Timex HRM, but Polar might be using a different frequency. Cateye might have a list of what HRM's are more susceptible to interference.

Small screw on the end of the sensor allows you to adjust the arms of both the cadence and speed sensors outward more towards their respective magnets. That may helo a bit.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

My heart rate monitor and my wireless computer blew each other up a week before IM Germany  Had to buy a new HRM and could only read the mph on the bike. My solution (unfortunately after the race) was to get a old-fashioned wired computer. No problems since...

I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly the Cateye DW installed and how easy it was to configure. Happily there have been no issues using it side by side with my Garmin 301 Forerunner - which also has a HRM. It is also nice that Cateye also provides a wheel magnet specifically for HED-3 wheels.

I rode for about 15 mins inside the other day as a test without the monitor and had no probs. I guess I'll see if the LBS will take it back and I'll pay the extra $10-20 for the one with HRM. Don't know if they will though. Thanks for the replies
