Training Indoors

I'm using a training plan for Half IM's from Joe Friel and it has been really helpful as I have migrated from Sprints to longer distances -- basically better helping me work through volume increases etc.

In some cases when you have a long or moderate bike workout and you do it indoors, you should cut back. for example, I have a 2 hour ride with 1:15 planned at 20 beats below LTHR. It said if done indoors cut to 1:30 total.

Here's my question: Is the time cut down because it is a harder over-all workout indoors or because of over-use repetitive type injury prevention?

I did a workout yesterday and just plane felt like it was really hard even with only a 155 HR and 245 average watts during the main part of the workout. Trying to figure out if I had a bad workout or indoors is really harder???

Anybody else have a tough time when its more than just spinning indoors?

Generally it is because it is more efficient workout on a trainer. No stopping for intersections, wind, hills etc. You are able to focus specifically on what the workout is, whether it is pedal stroke or maintaining a HR. It also depends on the trainer and what type of resistance it provides. I am also using a Friel IM training plan and it specifies indoor vs outdoor times for the bike, tho I will still tend to want to do the full time specified. It is tougher on the trainer - which is why it is important to have plenty of fluids available and a good fan is a must.

I think the "fan thing" was part of the workout issue. I just felt like it was harder to maintain the power and HR then outside, but could have been a bad day -- hoping not a bad day though.

I have a fluid trainer with Power readings -- Axiom from Performance.

I had also heard about the extra fluids thing as you sweatmore without wind, etc...

I have done 2 hrs so far on the trainer with training for IM AZ in April and you DEFINATELY sweat a whole lot more. If you don't replace what you lose it can never be a good thing.
