I'll apologize in advance for the long post :) caught the tri bug after doing a sprint and olympic distance last season and set my sights on a 1/2 next season.. in the classic case of doing too much too soon, i bought my new tri bike ( didnt get it fitted, another huge mistake) and went out for a long (for me) 50-55 mi. ride.. the inside of my knee started to hurt about halfway, i stopped, stretched it out a little and it went away.. until about half way back.. since i was close i decided to gut it out and by the end it was pretty bad.
The next day i felt pretty good, so decided to go for a little recovery run.. didnt make it a mile and had to walk home the pain was so bad behind my kneecap. Took a couple days off and decided to jump on the treadmill for a little cruise.. it hurt for a little bit during the warm up and went away.. i usually dont run more than 3-4 miles on the treadmill, but since i was feeling good i decided to go with it and went 6.
Holidays were here and during a couple trips I noticed the pain behind my kneecap if I was walking for long periods of time, didnt try running for almost a week because of this..
Since then i have tried to run a few times, treadmill, track, and I dont get more than 1/8 mile and it starts hurting.. I go through a normal day without any pain at all so I decide to give it another shot, and same thing, pain in a half a lap.. Ive been doing the icing, and taking ibuprofin and glucosamine joint stuff like a madman.
All the stuff Ive read, sounds like this patellofemoral pain syndrome, but i dont feel pain on stairs or just going about my daily routine.. hope theres some help out there as the stuff ive read scares me a little bit as they say its kind of unknown where this comes from and sometimes it just doesnt go away.
Thanks for reading my novel ;)

The best thing to do is go see a good PT. Explain what you did and get his opinion, I know we all want to self-medicate  but unless you are a doctor or PT you can guess all you want what is wrong with your knee. And if it really hurts I think spending a $100 on a PT consult is not a bad thing to do.
Good luck!
