Peeing on the bike
Yeah, good question. I had the same question before doing IM Brazil last year. My coach told me I should P at least twice on the bike. I was drinking all day but managed not have to go till I made T2.
On the course at certain aid stations they had port potties. Along course, people stopped in remote areas and helped the water the local vegetation. I was on the course coming up on someone and catching him pretty fast and then I realized what he was doing. Let's just say it wasn't the sprinkler you would want to run into during the bike course.
I did a 1/2 Ironman in Cancun, and I was able to P on the bike, but it takes time. I made sure that no one was around / close by. After the deed, I used my water bottle and sprayed it all over my shorts and leg.

Swim - just pee in the water
Bike - I just pulled to the side of the road and went. Didn't even get off the bike. Tho at IMWI lots of areas w/o spectators. Guess I over hydrated - I went 5 times! Considered doing it while riding, but never practiced it, will see this year...
Run - I just used the porta-potty at the aid station.

My first two IMs I peed at T1 and then not until I finished the race.
Last year I dismounted to water a bush at the 70km mark just before beginning the 9km climb of Richter Pass. I felt that I climbed better with an empty bladder and it eased the discomfort in my back as well to get off for a minute or two.

the Technique i use, is to wait till there is no body around (you may choose not to if your into that kind of thing) then take your foot out of your shoe and swing your leg over, just like when you come into T2, then once the balance is established pull your knicks down and "LET IT RAIN"
make sure you have good momentum before trying this, Bib shorts and 1 peace suits make this really difficult. that should get you started at least

I don't know, I couldn't bring myself to just pee on the bike and had an unfortunate number (6) of potty stops at IMFL, I guess because I drank about half the ocean on the swim (because normally on a training ride that long, was only going maybe once). I just used the porta potties, but it cost me time for sure.
I also heard that the worst volunteer spot in the race is racking bikes, for this very reason. The person I talked to said "never grab ahold of the saddle"

Pee on the bike! Some people can't pee while they are pedaling, so wait until a downhill, and clear behind you, unless some guiy has been drafting off you the whole day, and then just go. Make sure you have water on board, take that and hose your crotch down and then your leg and your shoe.
Unless you are a camel you should probably pee a minimum of two times. If you aren't concerned about your time, you can always dismount, but peeing on the bike isn't that bad in my opinion. Another thing to be weary of is hosing down any bottles that may be in your cages, cause the pee can get on those potentially.
T2 - put a fresh pair of socks in your transition bag...you don't want to run in pee socks the whole run.
Running - a little more difficult because you can't coast in a run. I have been able to do it before and have not been able to do it. No idea why though.
My philosophy is - when you are racing IM, all inhibitions are out the door. People are vomitting, bleeding from the nose, farting, snotting, etc....Anything goes. Good luck with the race!
This is something I should have done during my IM. (overhydrated, had 6 or 7 stops, many minutes lost waiting the times I stopped at official porta-potties in the towns).
To this day, I have no idea why this didn't occur to me during the race. I was soaking wet anyway because of the rain and had a full set of dry clothes waiting in T-2.
Those of you at IMWI, I learned after the race that frequent need to urinate is an early sign of hypothermia. So that's something to share with your friends.
Before IMWI, I had never gone on the bike, and hadn't considered it - pit stops were just part of the ride for me. But in the cold and rain, and with all dexterity shot from cold fingers - I just went while on the bike. It was weird, for sure. But considering how much I went on the bike, and that each time I went I seemed to have to go A LOT (that hypothermia thing), I saved several minutes. It would be hard for me to trade those in.
I say if you can learn to go while on the bike, give it a try. One more trick to eek out a few extra minutes if you can.
NO FAIR!!!! I saw guys peeing off their bikes at IMG and thought no fair! For us girls out there (or let me speak for myself), I guess we have to dismount and find the right place to go. Although I have heard of marathoners wetting themselves at the start line. Gross! I want to stay as dry as I can for as long as I can :p But to be honest, no one cares what you're doing because they're trying to figure it out for themselves during a race...so, pee on brother!

Oh, I KNOW for a fact that women pee on the bike, too! My coach was in a Half IM race and was riding behind Hilary Biscay when she decided to provide a demo for him! Fortunatley, he passed her in time to stay dry.

Of course it's 'effing hard, it's IRONMAN!
When I did IMLP last year, I peed while biking about 7 times...was drinking a lot, tend to pee a lot normally, and did not want to get off and stop..also, officials were handing out penaties to those NOT using a porta potty...trust me, sounds worse than is is...i just made sure no one was too close behind me...
Thanks to everyone for the input! I was hoping to pee while riding, and just wanted to make sure that such a practice was not totally faux pas. Huzzah.
you can also practice at work...just to be sure to bring a change of clothes.
I guess I am just the odd ball I dismount when I go. It's not a shyness or shame thing I just like to break up the monitiny (sp?)... At least that is what I did at the HIM we shall see how it goes for the IM.
I peed 7 times on the bike during IM Brazil last year.
Be sure to include fresh running socks (if you use them) in your T2 bag, and always keep a bottle of water on the bike so you can spritz yourself off afterwards. It's pretty obvious what's gone down when you see someone spritzing water on their crotch.
I like to change into running shorts in T2 so that when I need to go, I can just go to the side of the road, squat slightly and pull the crotch to one side. MUCH faster than looking for or waiting for a porta-potty. Why should men have all the fun?
Face it, we all get pretty disgusting during long races, so just get over the peeing on yourself thing and save yourself time.
If you get some in your bike shoes, just be sure that the day after the race you fill the shoes with water and maybe a tiny bit of bleach, let them sit for a few minutes, dump the water out, and then fill the shoes with crumpled newspaper, leaving a "tail" hanging out. Whenever the paper gets wet through the tail, replace it, and the shoes will dry in several hours. This is the same thing you should do if you get caught in rain.
I noticed several folks mention a high output at say IMoo last year.
Same thing happend to me in '03 and at last years Goofy Challange and in a bunch of races in cold weather.
Cold Diuresis is an increased urine output in cold conditions and of course is caused by being over-hydrated. Be flexible in long events in cold weather and cut back on the fluids in order to pee less.
This is a fine balance because you still lose alot through sweat and respiration in cold weather and don't want to become dehydrated but you also don't want to lose time having to pee too much.
Oh...I always pee in the suit, and on the bike. I tried "trail wagging" once but the stuff went everywhere!

I peed 5 times on the bike at timberman...
1. make sure there are no folks around you....
2. Stand up off the saddle.... give it a sec for the blood to get back..
3. pee.
As for the run... same applies... just pee.... it's harder than you think while running.
I have not done a 1/2 or an Ironman --just sprints and working toward OLYs for 2007. I thoroughly enjoyed this thread (--does this make me weird?)

PEE SOCKS -- LOL! :D
I have always wondered about this particular topic. Good post!

I'm getting ready for my first Ironman, and am wondering what people do when they have to pee. Do you just piss your shorts?
Swim: pee in suit before the swim.
Bike: ???
Run: probably don't need to pee.
