For my birthday my wife got me some personal coaching. He is suggesting I start off with Vo2 testing. Has anyone found this to be beneficial? Is $130 sound like a reasonable price?

I know there are semi-accurate ways of getting your VO2 max, but if youre going to get something else for free i'd try to get the most out of it and go for the professional VO2 testing.

I have had Vo2 max testing and it is worth EVERY penny in my opinion. You need to keep in mind that your numbers from a run VO2 and a bike VO2 will not be the same.

The real benefit from the test is not really the VO2 max number (although that is fun to know), but it is finding out your LT and your H/R training zones. You can estimate those numbers through less complicated tests but if you can know exactly what your zones are then you will be able to get the most out of every workout.

If you can get this test done then it is a no brainer to do it. Have fun! Oh and if you can only pick the run or the bike, I would do the run test first and then the bike later.

Very worth it....and $130 is a great price. The Sports Performance Institute here in Gainesville charges $250. Make sure to get a printout of all the results to use for reference when training. Do you have a HRM? This will be great to use once you have your results to train in specific HR zones determined by the testing.

Yes, I do have a HRM but havent used it much. I'll be doing both the run and the bike portion today. Thanks for all your input, I feel more confident now about getting the VO2 testing done.

similar to posted above, I have heard that VO2 itself is not necessarily helpful, as you can't really train that, but LT is the number you want.

Inside Triathlon recently had an article on VO2

Testing in Mpls is about $100 at the gym and $65 at a local univesity.

i have done quite a bit of VO2 and lactate testing for my dissertation. For a professional athlete who can have multiple tests it is an essential tool. Obviously its nice to know your VO2 but the important thing is knowing what your exact heart rate is at your lactate threshold. You can therefore then structure all your training around this heart rate. However, a retest needs to be done every couple of months as this value will change as your performance improves/reduces. This can obviously be very costly!

I'm having my 3rd VO2 test tomorrow. I have one every 4 months to reestablish my AT and Aet zones, not so much for the actual
VO2 number itself.

I don't know how VO2 testing is done when you pay for it, but I remember having mine tested about 15 years ago at Univ. of Pittsburgh. I was a student and was in my 3rd year of competitve bike racing and saw an ad for cyclists needed for testing. The first part of the test was a VO2 test where they had you on a stationary bike and hooked up to all the machines. You had to hold a certain cadence while they added weight to the resistance band once every 30 seconds until you could no longer hold the cadence. It was a while ago, but I believe I made it about 18 minutes and had a vo2 in the low 70's with a max HR of 210+. To this day it remains one of the hardest things i've ever done. I remember going out to the hall and sitting down for a while unitl I could recompose myself. I got a neat printout of HR and VO2 every 10 seconds for the duratin of the test. I wish I still had it but lost it long ago. The second part for the study was to ride the trainer at a set percentage of your LT for as long as you could while they took blood samples every 15 minutes from a catheter. I ended up getting sick and couldn't take that part, but I heard one guy rode for over 6 hours!

Anyway it was cool and FREE.
