Bike size
I'd get a second opinion. A 58" frame seems a bit big for your frame, 5'10". I'm 6' and was fitted out on a 56" frame
Try to find an LBS with a FIST certified technician on board or at least a more tri specific shop. You should be able to get some help also from a local tri club if there's one in your area.
You're right, it's alot of money, get all the information you can so you can make a well informed decision.

Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.
I'm not sure about the sizing on the Trek, but I'm a little shy of 5'9" and I usually fall at between 54 and 56, but the sizing is very specific to each bike company and frame design.
What were you riding last year?
But Cayman is right about the fit, a good investment if you can find a good fitter.
If you have really long legs, a 56 or 58 might work for a road bike, but a tri bike will pretty much always be a size smaller. And about being scrunched....you DO want your body a good bit tighter in the aero position than riding a road bike. As long as it isn't so uncomfortable that you lose power or that it limits your breathing, it should be ok. I'm 6' with a 34" inseam and my Plasma is a 54. Granted, the way that Plasmas fit requires a size smaller, but even then I'd only have a 56 for most other tri bikes. You'd probably be best with a 54, maybe a 56.

Not fast enough.
Everyone's body is different but I would say a 58 is going to be way to big for you.
Similar to UFTriGator, I'm 6' 0.5" (roughly) with a 33" inseam and I ride a 54cm Plasma.
I have long legs in proportion to my torso, but with that said, everyone's body is different and all bikes are built a little differently. If you have other shops in your area I think it would be wise to shop around.
I am about 5-10 and have a Trek Equinox 7 in the 54cm size. I have changed the bars so I could get a little more forward with my upper body, but otherwise the size is fine form me. I too think the 58 would be way too big and the 56 may also be pushing it.

I am 6-2 and ride a 58, so would think it might be a little big for you.
Googles, Out.

Is the man that thinks he can.
54, maybe a 56. I, too was pushed towards the larger size. either would work for me, but now i think the smaller size would have been a little better. But I am a tough fit with a loooong torso and short legs. Try the 54 with a longer stem. Then try the 56.
But find a FISTer first and get some measurements. Its pricey, it will be worth it in the end.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
I'm 6'0 and rode a 56cm Trek equinox 9 last season. I was pretty much between sizes on this bike, could have gone 58 or 56, but opted for the 56 as a means to gradually get to a lower position in the front. It fit fine. (Coincidentally, I'm selling that bike shortly--I'll be posting it on Trifuel in a day or two).
Thanks for everyone's advice on this, it has all been a huge help; I'll drive the extra hour where I can get a proper fit ...
PS....... PJT; why are you selling your bike?

Long story short -- I lucked into a new bike at a price I could not refuse. I'm selling the old one to partially pay for the new one.
Hey Blobin,
I tried to PM you but couldn't. I've put my bike up in the Trifuel classifieds if you are interested in going the used route: http://www.trifuel.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7422

Hi, I'm new to tri's and this forum.
I transitioned from Running to Tri's and Duo's last summer, after doing a few as an experiment, I'm now really excited about getting a little more serious next season, so am shopping for a tri bike.
The guy at the LBS say I could ride either a 56 or 58.... he's pushing me toward a 58 because he says I don't want to be "scrunched", and i should be more "extended". It seems kind of big for me.... I'm 5' 10.5" and the 58 gives me about 1 inch clearance from the bar when my feet are flat. The 56 gives me about 2". I'm looking at TREK Equinox. These guys are bikers, not tri athletes. He ordered a 58 for me to try (didn't have any in stock)
I'm concerned about spending this much $ on a bike only to find that i blew the sizing. I've read a few forums where people went to big for a bike so am concerned. I'm completely new to tri bikes and aerobars so I'm flying just a little blind!
Thanks in advanced for any advice/thoughts!
