Caffiene?
Hey man,
same as you, I'm no coffee drinker, allthough I do enjoy Coke or Sprite. But I try to avoid any cafeiine intake 2-3 weeks before a big race ( 70.3) or 1 week before a small race ( 1/2 marathon or O.D.). Then having some cafeiine prior to the race ( or during) will realy enhance your performance. Sometimes on longer training rides ( 4-5-6 hours) I'll have some cafeiine, if it doesn't conflict with the preps for a race.

It ain't much, if it ain't Dutch!!
I usually have a lunch time Starbucks when I'm at work, but apart from that, I'm not too much of a coffee drinker either.
I tried drinking a can of Red Bull and eating a banana before a race but sometimes felt low on energy about 6km into the race. This might be the caffein buzz wearing off.

No caffiene for me, other than what is in chocolate  I get way to jittery and freaky when I drink coffee....but I love the taste, so I go decaf. No sodas for me either. I know people argue that caffiene can enhance your performance, but for me I think it would be detrimental.

I have always have a doubt regarding this issue.
Reading different resources (1 for example Triathletes training bible) that recomends you to eat extra salt the day before a race for sodium reasons and better water retention......... and then reading that everybody (including Peter Reid and other Pros) have a cup of coffee before a race makes me wonder about the diuretic efects coffe has and the positive vs. negative efects one might have by drinking it.
Do we realy want a diuretic before a race????
I would like to hear a medical or nutritional expert´s point of view about this.
I always go without coffee into racing because I care more about hydration than the efect caffeine could have on my body. But don´t know if I´m woring too much.
Hyperactive Trifueler!!!! (I refuse to let the status go :p)
There is so much conflicting information on caffiene, pro and con it's comical. Bottom line, if you like coffee, have a cup and enjoy, it's not going to make one iota of difference.

Of course it's 'effing hard, it's IRONMAN!
I read all manner of sport science articles about the use of caffeine. I thought the literature made a convincing case for the beneficial exogenous properties of caffeine for endurance athletic performance.
In practice however, the introduction of 2 "doublshot Starbucks" drinks a couple of hours before a race completely wrecked me.
Why? First off, it violated the big law of "Never try something new on race day". Secondly, I was already excited as it was because it was... well, race day.
My HR went through the roof at standstill. I had a hard time keeping my breathing rhythm steady in the swim. My lungs were tired and I had a hard ride. My run was crappy. Basically, the caffeine high threw my carefully balanced training regimen out of sync and I never recovered from it because I did not train with a regular jolt of caffeine before each session.
Do we realy want a diuretic before a race????
I've read reports on the usage of caffiene for endurance athletes (I wish I had a link, but it was a while ago), and while you're working out it actually has no diuretic effects. What it DOES do though, is forces your body to metabolize more fat for energy, so that you use less glycogen, which will let you go farther than without caffiene before hitting the wall. I wouldn't ever want to drink coffee before working out since there's plenty of other stuff in there that will cause GI problems (never fun.....but always good for a dirty story) and the less caffiene you take in normally, the greater effect it will have when you're racing.

Not fast enough.
I've trained and raced with/without caffiene, though my only source is generally my Gus. Have definately noticed a difference on the longer rides/races.
Once I start on it in a race though I find I have to keep a steady supply to avoid any sort of crashing. Usually it's into any of the Gu's with their standard level while toting the double caffiene (espresso) for the run or time where mentally I need a little bit of a boost.

NO cafein for me! It makes my heart rate go higher...

Is caffiene beneficial to triathlon training and or racing? I'm sure this is a topic that has been discsussed before such as coffee or no coffee, but what about other sources.
I gave up caffiene about 4 years ago. Never much of a coffee drinker but did like coke and tea. No real reason, just decided that I was going to try giving it up and never have had it since.
I do see a lot of the people I ride with in group rides drinking coke or pepsi before rides and see that some gel's have caffiene in them. I've only been into tri's for one season and was wondering what people's thoughts were on training without any caffiene in ones diet?
