Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.
Better learn to get along without it. Cowboy up and leave it at home. A long olo ride or run is one thing, less than an hour, you'd really need to toughen up.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
I am the same way I love my Nano but 99.99999% of races no matter what kind of race I ran doesn't allow headphones of any kind. I think the reason is so race officials can communicate with you.
Now I have gotten away with it on a marathon or two but on Tri's the race officials are a lot more strict on the rules. I wear mine anything over an hour during excersize. I do get used to it but on race day I don't need it because I am all pumped up from the race....
I had until x-mas a small iPod shuffle. Now I have a new iPod video and I want to get the 5 CTS cycling workout videos they have into my iPod in order to have a better workout when I go to the spinning bikes at the gym than to follow the actual spinning class. (This only at this moment that I´m not following any strict traing plan)
But for my real bike I go without music for safety reasons.
As caiman said.....read the old thread!
Hyperactive Trifueler!!!! (I refuse to let the status go :p)

I love using my mp3 player while running and working out. I dont run as well without it. Can you wear them in the cycling and running portion of a triathlon? This might be a stupid question but I'm really curious. Thanks.
