When should I start training?
It is a really long way out to start worrying about that.
I would consider working the segment that you are worst at. But 8 months is a long time.
Consider signing up for races that are sooner (not nessisaryly triathlons) to help you focus and measure your progress.
If you are active I don't think that really focusing for more than 10 weeks for a sprint is worth it.

Go to trifind.com and click on Maryland and then Virginia and Delaware. There is a long history of tri's in this area..including some early spring tri's that are low key and a great way to get your feet...and the rest of you wet! The Calenders are filling up. Pokomoke in MD has a good rep. The April sprint in Manassas looks interesting. Might want to consider some early season Du's also as a great way to gain some experience. A number of the local clubs offer low key club events for newcomers too.

Krukker ~ Welcome to the site! Fill out more of your profile so we can know more about you. If you don't want to do your first tri until August, you have more than enough time to train. If you want to tri sooner, check out the Virginia Run sprint at finswheelsfeet.com or any of the local events by setupevents.com. As Anton mentioned, trifind.com is also a great resource.

It’s never too early to start training. But I would say it would be worth your while to evaluate where you are today and what you want to accomplish in your first Tri in August (and beyond)…Then work out a training schedule. Easing into a routine is better than going crazy right up front with a zillion miles per week and then getting injured, frustrated or burnt-out because your body is not ready for the mileage yet.

Do a search on "base building" too. This is a really good time of year to build up your base. The fun thing about base building is that you don't have to focus on any particular leg of a tri. Base building can be anything that gets your heart rate up a bit. I'd be skiing if we'd ever get some snow. Might have to move to Denver.
I'm looking at your posted endurance levels for the sprint tri: 3, 6, 5, you say.
Work on the swimming, starting now.
Develop balance efficiency and c onfidence in the water because the swim start with a hundred or more people thrashing about in the water will be a rude awakening for you in your first triathlon.
It looks like you think the bike/run legs aren't a challenge but to avoid injury in your summer speed prep you should be doing as much base riding running now as you can fit in.
Make it interesting and not too demanding physically so you won't lose interest before August.

Hi there - newbie here!
My fiance and I signe up for a sprint triathlon in August. We're excited as all get out but don't want to start training too early. We both are active but still need to get up to speed. I have a few training programs from this site and others that I'm going to modify and make our own but don't know if we should start now or just go easy with workouts (3-4X a week).
Ideas???
