so today being the 31st our coach scheduled the "New Years Special" training set. Part of it comprised 31 400's on descending times from 1:35 to 1:15 (decreasing 5 sec's per lap) then repeat the set. I was starting to fatigue about the third time through and the coach threw me a metronome and said run to the beat, you will feel different but less tired. The difference it mad was OUTSTANDING! has anyone else had experience with these toys?

I think they work well for speed work...but thats about it.I think conditions on the rode, and trails for sure aren't conducive. I've had experience with one ,like you,at a structured track workout and found it helpful.
On a side note..at my first IM ,on the second lap of the run, I came up on this guy running with one...just beeping away in a beat he was no longer able to keep up to...It helped me alot..I had to speed up to get away from the racket!

Ever Run with a metronome?
I have run with a wide variety of boys, girls, dogs and even a moose but I have never run with a metronome. I'm a country boy and tend not to run with little people from the city too much. Not saying they are bad folk just don't know any nomes other than that obnoxious little guy from Travelocity.

you would be surprised how fast you can run when an angry 2ft man is threatening to bite your ankles. He is a good training partner!

Everyone seems to agree that one key to optimal performance on the bike is to keep a relatively constant tempo/cadence while riding.

The same appears to be true for both swimming and running. My Astrale 8 bike computer has a cadence feature that helps with my riding cadence --- usually in the 90 to 100 rpm range. I also have a tempo trainer that I sometimes use for swimming and running --- its basically a metronome. http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/3971.htm

For swimming, I set it at 70 strokes per minute; and for running, at 90 foot strikes per minute. As with riding, maintaining a higher cadence than feels natural is more efficient.
