My bike fell off the trainer this morning (hel-lo!) and now it won't shift into the big chain ring. How do I fix it

Put it back on the trainer and crank it by hand.
Try and change gears and take a look at the derailleur and see if anything is bent or seems to be stuck.
If there is nothing obvious I would take it to your LBS of choice and have them take a look.

Nothing to it, but to do it

It's the front derailleur. Like Beads said, try cranking it with your hand while sitting on the ground next to it. See if you can spot the area where it gets stuck. It probably just needs a little adjustment.

If it's not bent, it's probably pretty likely that the limiting screws need to be readjusted like glbrum said. There should be two small set screws on the derailleur. One controls the bottom limit of the derailleur's motion (small chainring), and the other controls the upper limit. If you loosen the upper limit set screw to allow the derailleur to swing further outward, the chain will go back to the big chainring. Then fine tune it so that it doesn't rub. Shift back and forth to make sure. While you're at it, you might as well check the lower set screw to make sure that it wasn't knocked out of place, too.

Here's the complete lowdown on derailleur adjustment: http://sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.html

Also highly recommend getting a copy of Leonard Zinn's book Zinn and the Art of Bicycle Maintenance. Shows how to do just about anything (not that I do, but I can do a few things now).

hey, thanks for the input! although i took the bike to the LBS, i looked at the bike to see what you were talking about....and you were right...the limiting screws needed adjustment. anyway, one of my goals this year is to learn more about bike maintenence, and i'll check out the Zin book. running is SO much easier

I got a good tip for you Andrea,

STOP SCREWING AROUND WITH YOUR BIKE! Properly lock that puppy up in your trainer! ;)

And that book mentioned: Zinn and the art of bike maintenance is okay, got it myself ( if I can find it I'll send it to you if you like)

Noel.

And also check out parktool.com/repair. That site, along with Sheldon Brown's site that Kona mentioned are great resources.
