I struggle a lot with gettting up in the morning. I've tried to get earlier this past semester, but most of the time it hasn't quite worked out. Anyone have any tips for getting up early? I've been trying to get up at about 6:30 to 7 a.m. I'm in college, and I generally sleep until 5 minutes before my first class starts.... Would someone mind stopping by every morning and dropping a bucket of water on me every morning? lol

Think about popping out of bed right before you go to sleep. If you already have the plan set (even if it's as easy as waking up), following through is much easier. I learned this working 80+ hr weeks a few summers back. Alarm went off every day at 5:55, I did 100 push-ups, took a cold shower, and was dressed by 6:00. Work all day, get to bed by 11:00 and repeat...no sweat. Well, I did want to kill myself partway through the summer, but at least I never had trouble getting up.

In college eh? What time do you go to sleep? How many hours are you getting a night?
Find a training partner. Works for me, as does more sleep and less leat nights...

I agree with the idea of a training partner.
My long runs on early, cold mornings would not happen some of the time if I didn't have the threat of my friend busting my chops if I didn't show.:D

Try to go to bed earlier so you feel more rested.

On the other hand if you are a night person, you could always schedule some of you workouts at night.

See I am the opposite I can't ever seem to sleep in. Now that my Ironman training is in full though I do have a little bit easier time sleeping in. So the answer is be lazy and do nothing all day :) lol

For me, I just have to have a specific workout planned - not just a general notion to do a workout. Also having the gear ready to go helps.

Join a sport like crew. That's how I started getting up really early. I agree with everyone above that getting a training partner (or team) is a great way to get up nice and early because you have a responsibility to someone other than yourself.
My thoughts on getting up early is that it gets the workout over with. Usually, if I don't work out in the morning, all day long I am occupied with thinking about when I am going to fit the workout in, what I am going to do, what the weather will be like and all that other good stuff. I hate that so on days when I don't feel like getting up, I just think about that and it helps me jump right out of bed.

Set the alarm clock as loud as possible, and put it where you have to get up to turn it off. Then immediately turn the lights on. Works for me.

You could always join the USMC!
I GUARANTEE you would be awake by 4:30 am every morning to the sounds of a psycho banging a garbage can and turning the lights on.
You might even get your wish and have a bucket of water dumped on you too!
You would get your run in as well :D

In the book "Be IronFit" by Don Fink, he recommends a 21 day plan. Get up early for 21 days and tell yourself "I only have to do this for 21 days, for 20 days, for 19..." you get the idea :) You may discover you've made a new habit and getting up early is no longer a problem. It has taken me a couple weeks to getting up just pass 5:00am to run, but it is easier now. Plus I've accomplished my run workout for the day and I don't have to stress over fitting it in after work. Nothing like the sound of reveille first thing in the morning... That and some one screaming at the top of their lungs an inch from your face...

That's like one of my all time favorite quotes when it comes to an area like this. "Do, or do not. There is no try." -Yoda Let me just caveat that with I am not a star wars nerd. I have only seen one out of the 6 movies and I didn't even see the whole thing. I just really think that is the way to live do or don't no excuses...

Ahhh, youth! I wish I were still in college... partying all night (oops...you don't do that at Taylor, right??), sleeping in 'cause classes didn't start til after 12:00pm.... Those were the days  Then you start tri-ing and get into the habit of getting up at 6am and not sleeping in past 7am on days off...!

I was in the Indy area for Christmas and you know, it was still dark at 8:00am!!! No wonder you have trouble getting out of bed! Anyway, its important for me to train in the morning...I'm not a morning person, but feel like crud if I don't do it first thing. So, Just do it! (How many cliche's can we come up with?)

I'm the same way with sleep. It is soooooo hard for me to get up when I'm in a nice warm bed and still feel like I haven't slept enough, even though I've gotten my full 8 hours in.

The few times I've been able to get up early are when I'm meeting people who are leaving at a set time and if you're late, they won't wait for you. Also, having all of my gear ready helps - sometimes.

Too bad I'm too old for the USMC. Darn it all! :p

There has to be a good reason for me to do it. I'm not one to just wake up early for the sake of it.

Maybe you should give yourself a goal race, a 5k or 10k, marathon, anything, and then maybe that will give you motivation to get out of bed....

finding a training partner or team or club or something like that is great motivation to get up. I find it a lot more fun to train with people so knowing that those people are going to be at a given spot at a given time it GREAT motivation to go ride.

I'll definitely try some of these ideas. Joing the USMC sounds like the best idea though. ;)

Star, yeah it sucks in IN during the winter since the sun doesn't get up early either. It also never snows, stupid global warming.

As you're lying in bed thinking about whether to get up or not, just tell yourself that 99% of your classmates don't have the will power or the drive to get up this early and get something done - hell, I know I didn't in college. That, and death metal (good call on the Reveille) - if you can fall back asleep listening to someone screaming at the top of their lungs, nothing short of an atom bomb in going to get you out of bed. Once you get used to it, you'll look forward to the days when you get to sleep in (ie, 6 AM wake-up call).

Kinda side story my brother likes to just sleep the day away so some times I will grab my bass and amp and put it right next to his head and play "Another Know It All" by Chevelle. Trust me that wakes people up, however it doesn't win me any popularity contests...

So I think if you just get a good alarm stereo and play some really heavy stuff that will get the blood pumping.

The secret to getting up early and feeling good? Go to bed at the SAME time evry night and get up at the SAME time every morining. Your body will develop a rhythm and will respond great to the routine.

definitely get in bed earlier and consistently...i find it's the consistency of doing it everyday that makes it much easier

the great thing about getting up early is that it frees up your day. NO ONE will ask you to drinks or an unexpected meeting at 5am, but they do it at 5pm and you'll already have a workout done...!

This worked really well for me today. Along with putting my alarm clock across the room. Unfortunately it was my phone and I just hit snooze and went back to bed, but I only gave myself two snoozes and then I HAD to get up. I think what helped the most was having all of my stuff ready, which I've done before, but it takes the thought process out of it all.

Good tips everyone! Thanks!

I think the snoozes help me. I set my alarm for 15 min or so before i need to be up and hit the snooze alarm twice. Seems to make it a little easier to get out of bed.

So your saying that if i go to bed at 10pm and wake up at 6am every night, than after a couple weeks I'll get used to it and I won't want to kill myself anymore??

Work out in the evening. Just as easy as getting used to waking up at 5 is getting used to working out right after class. Whether its 5am or 5pm its still the same time being used.

and i haaate waking up any earlier than i have to.
