OK Scott..Step up.
There were 8.1 million race finishers in 2005.
5% of those finished a marathon. (423,000)
Less than .5% of them finished an Ultra, which in this case is 40 MILES or more..50 Km not really being considered an ultra any longer.
It's calling to ya..you know it is!

I am looking to do a spring trail marathon in Delaware,
A 50km in NJ in August,
the Chessieman in Late September,
and NYC Marathon in Early November.
When is that ultra near you?

There is the Rachel Carson Ultra in PA on August 25 I belive. Its a trail run. Not even close to touching that though.
I believe the Rachel Carson event is on June 21st (whenever the summer solstice is).

wannabtriguy and I du tri I think you're talking about two different events. The June 23 event is a 34-mile endurance hike, http://www.rachelcarsontrails.org/rct/challenge, and the August 25 event is a 50-mile ultramarathon, http://www.rachelcarsontrails.org/bt/ultrachallenge.
I should try the 50 miler, never done one and I grew up near the trail. Though the "hills" in Illinois are nothing like the hills in Western PA....

I'm planning on doing the 34 miler. I've hiked that trail a few times. Nice area. The hills are steep and they never seem to end.
Good times.
Here ya go...want to be one of the few?
last year out of 8.1 million race finishers
less than 15,000 compleated an ultra and that includes all the folks who think they have stepped up by doing a 50k.

Try comming out here to Washington and step up to one of our 50ks with 7,800+ ft of elevation. It is no coincidence that that best ultra runners in the world train in my back yard. (i.e. Scott Jurek).
Less than .1% of them finished an Ultra, which in this case is 7,000 feet elevation gain or more..any less not really being considered an ultra any longer.
I wonder what the percentagevof people out their have finished an ironman distance race before???

Something to think about.
I heard on the radio this morning on my way to work.
87% of Americans who own running shoes,
do not run.
That means only 13% of Americans who have running shoes actually use them to run.
Since I am usually in the middle of the pack, that puts me in about the top 7-8% of the population.
Not too shabby.
Everybody here should give themselves a pat on the back for using their running shoes, as well as their bike, and swimsuit or trunks.
