Hey,

So after finally getting some contracts I'm going to get some sunglasses. Now looking through I'm seeing a lot of different lens colors and I remember hearing somewhere that different colors are better for different thing (other then complementing what ever color jersey you happen to be wearing :p ). And finally are polarized lenses a good thing (like them for normal) for use in a tri?

Lens colors:
Grey is best for bright days.
Orange is a little more all around
Yellow or clear for cloudy days.

I prefer grey. Things seem purple for a while after you pull off your orange of yellow glasses

If I was to buy a pair of shaed just for riding, I would not get them polarized because polarization can interefere with your LCD displays on you HRM or bike comp. Its not a BIG issue, but I have to mount my HRM on my bars cause I cant see it on my wrist due to the polarizing effect.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

I wear orange lenses as my default, but the glasses have interchanable lenses -- one of the main reasons I like them. I don't see the purple thing triguy does. I don't like grey since it can make it hard to see details if you enter a shaded area (in particular an issue for me with mtn biking).

Oakley's "Slate" color lenses have been the BEST investment I've ever made. They're only available in Half Jackets or M-Frames, but are the most pleasant lenses I've ever used. I keep them in all the time, for all conditions, and they're awesome. They're a very light tint, so they work well in overcast days, but offer enough protection for even the brightest days. I can't say enough about them.

As a long time contact wearer I can tell you the most important thing is fit followed closely by interchangeable lenses. I find that without glasses my eyes dry out very quickly with contacts on. You may find that you are wearing them quite often for long periods of time, so make sure they are comfortable. And I have Oakley M Frames with grey and clear lenses.

A seconded here on making sure you've a good fit. Something that covers more of your eye, and thus leads to less wind around your eyesocket will make contact life much easier at biking speeds.

I would definately go with sunglasses with interchangable lenses (use the Native Dash myself). Personally I like polarized, and have both grey/green and orange polarized lenses, as well as standard oranges. I've found them to be really nice if I'm riding out in the rain, as I can see through waterpuddles and such without the reflective glean, and they help if the sun is glaring off car windows.
