Here is the full story http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061214/ap_on_sp_ot/cyc_athletes_steroids

In a nutshell, the government is alleging that Tammy Thomas lied on the witness stand during the BALCO probe.

It sucks to hear news like this.
You want to believe that these amazing athletic accomplishments are done by an athlete that has trained hard, and not because of some external supplementation.

It's very hard to tell from the story if there is any "new" evidence about Thomas' use of PEDs. She tested positive in the past and has seemed pretty wishy-washy in her denials. There is a long, but fascinating, story in the NY Times (free registration required) about her life after being banned from cycling about 2 years ago here: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?sec=travel&res=9804E2DD1E3CF933A2575BC0A9629C8B63

Interesting quote: Being treated as an outcast makes her cringe, but when asked whether steroid use is wrong, she said: ''Is it cheating if everyone does it? I devoted 10 years of my life to this sport. Why me? Why me? Why can other athletes live a glorified life and my life is tainted forever?''

"Is it cheating if everyone does it?"
Yes.
"I devoted 10 years of my life to this sport. Why me?"
Because you cheated and you got caught.
"Why me? Why can other athletes live a glorified life and my life is tainted forever?''
See above.

I stopped believing that a long time ago. Heck I am surrounded by AGers who use EPO, etc at the events I do so if they are cheating then you know the top athletes are all doing it. This stuff is here to stay. :(

Hey Mdd,
nice sig-line.

I agree about the drug use.
Of course it's easier for those of us who aren't even close to winning anything to be clear about it. (Speaking for myself anyway)

Tommy Thomas????
Mdd is right on I think and how sad...
It is here to stay even in the AG's...
Wish we could test any one who wins an ag award
I suspect testostrone supplimentation in my age group...just whine to your doc that you aren't feeling "Manly" anymore and it can be had. I secretly wish all the AG winners at Kona would be tested...but they'll never do that.

That is what makes it even worse. These cheaters are only upset that they get caught - no remorse for the fact that they did cheat.

Tammy(Tommy) probably grows a fuller beard than me too!!
As I stated in another post they should eliminate prizes.
Everybody gets a medal and if you top out your AG then you get bragging rights, and a Homemade Pie!!

I don't think anybody would be doping or juicing for just pie!

Unless it was REALLY GOOD pie!! :D

*sigh* She should realize by now that cheating isn't about what other people do... it's about what is allowed in the rules of the games we play. Like many others, I rarely follow pros in any sport since there is too much trying to get around the rules instead of improving at the game.

I'll cheer for Chris Lieto still though... Paul you better make sure he stays cheer-able! :)

since the olympics/NFL/MLB ect look the other way I think we should follow Italy's lead where using EPD's is considered fraud and you can get jail time. I think that is about the only thing that would make people even stop and think twice about cheating and even that probably isn't enough.
