A question from a new triathlete/cyclist to the experienced...aside from poorly fitting shoes, what could be some other causes of toes falling asleep, even on short rides? Could there be something in the way I'm positioning my feet while riding? Thanks!

Try inserts from a pair of retired running shoes. And make sure your cleats are properly aligned. Thats about it.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

It's possible that the problem could lie higher up in your legs (seat position, etc.). I used to also get some numbness when riding a converted road bike in aero position. Riding group rides (i.e., sitting up mostly) and riding aero on a tri bike didn't cause problems. I think maybe a blood vessel was slightly constricted from bending over too far.

Also, I make sure that I wiggle my toes every so often (pretty much whenever I remember to do it). This seems to keep the blood going through them and I rarely lose feeling anymore. Simple solution, but it helps.

Loosening my shoes and wearing thinner socks worked for me.

When I went to shoes with a carbon bottom the hot spots went away and no longer needed inserts - In my old shoes I had used some from Good Feet - they did help.
