Lots of human interest type stuff and not enough of the regular age-groupers, but hey, it is triathlon (and at least it's not professional poker) so I guess we should be happy with what we get, huh?

And pretty good shots of tribro's bro!

I watched it as well. It had a lot of emotional points and not much actual race coverage, but I'll take what I can get.

Who is tribro's bro?

I enjoyed the coverage and you just have to take it for what it is. I also was surprised that more was not made of Lieto since he was the top American especially since they focused so much on the female American but she did fnish quite high.

I disagree that there should have been more coverage of regular age groupers and actually thought there was too much of that. The human interest stories are good and that should be the extent of the AG stuff. Watching a bunch of regular joes stumble around is not interesting especially when they can show you the pros battlng for the win!

Anyway great stuff and wish they would have more of it on TV!

Ya, I'd agree. It's definitely done for the masses and not necessarily those who follow the sport itself. But like you said it is Triathlon and the clips of the pros and age groupers swimming, riding, and running still make it worth watching. Got me pumped!

Bro is chris lieto he placed 9th overall and 1st american. surprised they didn;t cover that a little more for the american audience. Too much of just Stadler and Macca and not much of anyone else on the men's side. Made it seem it was just the Aussies vs. ze Germans.

Anyway, still a good production. I actually caught a shot of myself taking pictures along Alii drive. Sweet my 15 nano seconds of fame :)

Addendum: Yeah, let me amend that to say more of the TOP age groupers. I would have loved to have seen a little more about the top men and women's groupers - the folks who have regular jobs and still reach near the pinnacle of the sport.

And, I strongly concur on more of the top American finisher and our local favorite -- Chris Lieto.

When they make one of us director of NBC Sports we can change all that ;)

As Tribro well wrote, it really got me pumped too!! Boy can´t wait till tomorrow´s long run...
I enjoyed the human stories, I found them really inspirational.
I am disapointed about the lack of coverage of the rest of the pack of the pros...particulary, why so little said and filmed about the Top American, Chris Lieto...
Did anybody missed Peter Reid?? I did...
But I really enjoyed, all the way....

I was under the impression that Herriman (sp?) went into a corner too fast and crashed... The broadcast said he was hit by a car. If that was simply a mistake, okay, but if it was sensationalism, which would not surprise me, shame on NBC for that...

They put several shots of him during the bike section and there was one of him streaming into T2. Go back and look for a guy coming into T2 with a bright yellow bike. That's him.

hmm, i didn't catch that. I'll have to watch again. I remember the girl they covered was hit by a car, but yes I thought he crashed coming down a mountain and his back fell on a rock.

i too would have liked to see all the AG winners. i liked the coverage though, could have been more balanced with pros/interest but it also needed to be longer, even just another hour.

how bout the nun who finished at 16:59? that was pretty cool.

congrats to your bro!

I don´t agree with having more of the AG winners. We have to understand we would like to see that but most people wouldn´t. I guess NBC knows what sells and what doesn´t.

What do you guys think about those people rolling to the finish line for that ALS guy??? I bet that was nice for the guy..but wouldn´t like to see that happening more often. Couldn´t imagine myself racing the IM and having to jump over a guy or slow down my last 2 meters just to watch him roll. I sounded realy selfish I know!!! But hey in the end it´s a race!!!!

On the other hand it was sad to see this guy after a year and know he is no longer able to walk!!! What a horrible sickness.

I love the Johnny Blaise story, and he's a true inspiration. But I agree, I think the rolling across the finish line was a little over the top.

I thought last year's coverage we a little more balanced.

I do love the human interest stuff, gets me pumped -- like the army guy and the nun. Wasn't fond of the Adventure racing fire fighter though. The guy running for John Blaise was pretty cool.

This year they kind of blew through the race coverage. Next thing I knew, Stadler was crossing the line. I did like they way he waited for McCormick and Al-Sultan. When Jones crossed the line I looked at the clock and there was still 30 minutes to go.

All in all, I think NBC actually does a great job.

I agree with you christri but again..... triathlon isn´t the typical sport a couch potato would be interested to watch on sundays with a six pack of beers and a bag of chips.

I would also love to see more of the pro race (I as a Triathlete) but I also can imagine why NBC covers the race this way. And also why WTC is interested in having their race be transmited this way. Don´t forget that this coverage encourages many "morthals" to go out there and sign up for another IronMan race and start training. They have to sell the IronMan to everyone.

Remeber that in Nascar or NFL you can´t just sign up for a race or match. You have to be a pro to race with the pros. That IS NOT THE CASE with Triathlons you can actualy race in the same race with the pros.:D

Exactly! The average american (who this broadcast is targeted for) doesn't care who won the M 35-39 Ag or the F40-44. NBC shows the special interest folks, like the miltary man and the nun to show that ordinary people can do this sport. They are an inspiration to everyone in this world. You can't tell me that after seeing a 78 year old woman finish an IM that didn't inspire people do get up and do something active.

If you want more race coverage, try and catch a viewing of one of the European IM's that they sometimed show on tv. Euro's are gung-ho IM and the hour broadcast was almost all racing. And if you want more Kona coverage, watch IMlive on the day of the event and get the whole thing on live webcast.

I love the NBC coverage, but it's not geared towards the seasoned triathlete. We're already hooked on the sport. It's geared towards people who "would never do something like that" in hopes that they may take an interest in the sport.

What you didn't see or know from the coverage is everything Stadler said about Macca being a cheat...Personally, I can't stand Stadler. I think he is an arrogant prick...holding up the two fingers as he is running down Ali'i, correcting the announcer and saying probably five times that he had won it "twice," yelling "F$&% You!!!!" as he crossed the finish line...(if you Tivo'd it, go back and look at his lips after he crosses..he clearly screams it out). The coverage made it seem like they were best buddies and I think it fell short in that it missed the introduction of a major rivalry for the next few years, which is good for the sport in my opinion. Macca on the other hand is much more personable and enjoyable to watch. One of my newest favorites. I also like Faris as well though, pretty mellow and humble guy. I will always remember Norman as the pre-madonna, cry-baby who can't change a flat.

I thought they spent way more time covering the top athletes this year than they did last year. Last year's race was all about the human interest stories. This year we saw more of the top men and especially women's race - lots of Michellie Jones and Natasha Badman. I was rooting for Badman because she has such a great running grin and looks like an underdog because she seems so much shorter than Jones' very tall build.

Still trying to find it myself...or someone around Austin who has it.

Interesting note, I downloaded a torrent of the German coverage. The entire coverage was focused on the pros with a couple minutes at the end showing some of the more interesting finish line crossings, and those by certain people (ala the nun).

I think NBC wants more viewership so this formula works better. Besides, this is an event where most of the participants aren't professional athletes so it's fair to cover the human interest side of the event.

I missed it this year.
NBC has a formula that seems to work.
They have won EMMY's for their coverage.

The human interest is not as interesting as it was in the past.
I think that is because I am not a wannabee anymore.

Watching Dick and Rick Hoyt a few years back was my inspiration to set IM as my goal.

Most of us here were probably inspired at some point by watching the coverage over the years.

I wish they covererd Chris Lieto a bit more but it was cool seeing him.

I was at the event, but spent much of the "down" time watching the big screen they had set up. I am pretty sure that what I was seeing was the same as what the people on the webcast were seeing. I thought the coverage was pretty good...I just wished they would broadcast it on OLN, like they do the tour. I don't think there is any way in hell we are going to get extended coverage on NBC ever, but there are good options out there.

The only thing I fear is joe schmo sitting at home with a beer resting on his gut, decides to enter the lottery after seeing some of these human interest stories. I think it is great that we are a "wecloming" sport, but this is the superbowl and I think you need to pay your dues before you can just walk into it. True, you have to qualify, but come on now...there are hundreds of people out there who are fast, but not qualifying fast who in my opinions have earned the right to be there more so than the Florida Marlins manager who just woke up and said, I am going to go on the biggest stage in Triathlon. That guy was around 40 maybe and his time from what I can tell was pretty darn slow....This is an elite event for elite atletes, if you want to do Ironman, go sign up for IM florida or any other one...don't take a slot from a truly deserving athlete.

yeah, sorry I am so slow

I recorded it and will be posting it tonight
its about 2 gigs in its current mpeg format, so I will probably split it or re-encode it

I will post again in a couple of hours and give you my FTP address and hopefully a specific address where the torrent can be found as well

I will probably have to limit the FTP to 2 or 3 users at a time, last year i didnt restrict it and it was super slow because 15 people were trying to get it at once

if you arent familiar with FTP you can get a free client here
http://www.smartftp.com

and you can simply access it via internet explorer
...shh dont tell NBC ;)

The torrent file I used for the German coverage of the Pros. (see attachment).

Basically, if you already know what's going on you can figure it out from the coverage. If you don't (like I didn't), you can figure it out, it just takes a bit more...and it's focused on the pros the entire race.

PM me if you have any questions.

I am working on creating the torrent now, I will post it once its done

in the meantime you can access the FTP using the following info

Username: kona
Password: kona
(all lowercase)
address: 68.162.154.190
port: 21

to access via explorer use ftp://kona:kona@68.162.154.190:21
Firefox I do not believe accesses FTP; so use internet explorer v5.0 or higher
let me know if you have trouble accessing it - if you get the message "too many users" someone else is on there

you can also access my IRC server on the undernet
channel #moviestogo use the trigger for NathanChaseK

the torrent should be up in about 20 mins or so

obviously at this point I am the only seeder, so if you download the file, feel free to help out sharing

as of now it appears the FTP is running rather slowly, sorry, cant do much about it; my bandwidth is wide open, so its not my side you downloaders you

keep in mind i recorded this off the TV broadcast, so it is no way DVD quality and I did the best I could with the commercial edits

to open torrent files and download go to bittorrent.com and download the free software

Well, in Stadler's defense, he was labeled a "fluke" after his win in 2004. So I imagine anger was a little bit of his fuel this year. Was Lance arrogant for holding up 2 fingers after his second tour win? Besides, isn't there a certain level of self absorbtion required to compete in an individual sport?

In any case, I'm in love with Desiree Ficker. :)
