I'm not a big spandex fan and it seems like triathletes are really into spandex. I'm thinking I would prefer to take a couple extra seconds and pull a pair of loose running shorts on over the tri/bike shorts. Anyone else do this? I don't think the aerodynamics between spandex and looser running shorts are going to make any difference. The only thing I will loose is a second or two in transition. I'm looking forward to doing some tri's but cringe when I look at some of the outfits people wear.

if want to do the sport, you better get used to spandex.

I've seen people do that, and I actually did my whole first tri just in running shorts. However, after a while I got used to tight clothes and now I even run in tight shorts.

If you are in this for fun and that is what it takes for you to have fun, go for it :) If you find you are getting to a more competative level, and want to cut everything extra from your race, you'll loose 'em. But if it bugs you enough that you wouldn't do the sport, I'd say they are worth it.

I wouldn't be caught dead in a pair of baggy shorts!
Chaffing.
Veinous pressure is improved in Lycra.
You are welcome to wear whatever makes you comfortable...but what about being seen in lycra makes you uncomfortable?
And those folks that make you cringe? They will accept you in your baggy shorts so maybe you should accept them in their lycra.

I would get over the fear of spandex. I first wore some for crew in college. Got over it real quick. People dont check you out in your spandex (unless you are hot) nor do they go "that dude shouldnt be wearing it" (at least the triathletes dont.) We're all there for the same reason and the spandex is part of the sport. Look at it this way: at least briefs arent the mandatory thing anymore!

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

I urge you to step out of your comfort zone just a little and try it. No one is going to make fun of you because everyone else will be in spandex.

Another thing that helps me whether in spandex or speedo is that chances are, I'm never going to see these people again, so why worry so much about what they think about me.

Also, the less clutter the better. It's just more to worry about.

Not on the bike but in the run for sure. Especially if your spandex is not black :-). I'll throw a pair of light shorts over the spandex tri shorts during the run for modesty reasons. I need the spandex though because I'm a big guy with thick legs. Chaffing is a drag.

in my first sprint tri i swam and rode in my jammer-type speedo then put shorts on over it (number pre-attached) for the run. That way i didn't have to buy a number belt and felt more comfortable on the run. probably added a second or two over using a number belt but saved me $8 and some awkwardness. shirtless is my preference whenever i can get away with it... i never figured out why more people don't do that.

You ever seen me without my shirt?
Lately though...many races require shirts and I start raceing when it's cold...shirtless is not a good idea!

JeffG, we could refer you back to the thread titled "Question for the Trifuel Women"...which address the leg shaving issue, among other things. But it may take you all day to read through it. So, from my perspective, there's nothing hotter than a triathlete in tight pants on a bike...or running, for that matter! It motivates me to keep up with them :D

I'd bet that most of us...well, let me speak for myself, started in cotton shirts, no hat, hair flying loose sticking to my face, big baggy shorts and thick cotton socks. I've learned that tight and light are the best bet!

JeffG do whatever you want.

But I can tell you people in races won´t look at your lycra! If anything they will look at your finish time LOL :D

I guess it´s a big issue around some places where people tend to have more of a "macho" thing going on. You can´t imagine the comments I have to hear around here in Guatemala about cyclists and spandex.

But in Triathlons I feel at home they all wear it and nobody looks at you funny!!! I can´t wear baggy shorts cause I always get chaffing in a part of my leg, I was told I had to loose an extra few pounds for that ((Don´t think so!!!)) to stop happening but it always does... so again I go with what works for me and you should do the same. Use whatever works for you.

Hyperactive Trifueler!!!! (I refuse to let the status go :p)

Anton - I knew you were a man with a firm understanding of himself. I would NEVER race without a shirt. I have a mirror and
a good perspective at what is looking back.
I do Bikram yoga class at least once a week and it never ceases to amaze me how the men in the class can go topless. A few look good and I am envious BUT by in large, well by in XL, some of those boys need a reality check and should cover it up!

Lycra is a gift from Above.

For tri's up to 1/2 IM I am wearing spandex tri shorts.
For an IM I put on regular bike shorts for the bike,
and changed into running shorts for the marathon part.

For just running events I feel comfy in running shorts.

Wear what makes you comfortable.:D

Nothing to it, but to do it
