Ebay and Pedals

Hello fellow Forumites...

I've got a question about Ebay and the stuff that people sell. I'm asking Santa for a road bike and I need clipless pedals. The LBS has the Look KEO Carbon pedals for $220. I go on Ebay and find I can get them new for $148. That's a huge discount!!!

My question.....Is this stuff legit? Has anyone bought these pedals off of Ebay? Is there any way to assure oneself that what you get is in fact NEW? Some of the pedals are coming from Hong Kong, Eastern Europe and Australia. Sounds like counterfeit stuff to me when you talk China. I'm just real skeptical but I know a lot of people buy stuff all the time off Ebay. Any horror stories?

I've never purchased merchandise from Ebay just because I'm afraid I'll get screwed but if I can get NEW Look Carbon pedals for $80 cheaper than the LBS then I'll take the plunge.

Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've bought plenty of stuff on eBay, but it has usually been stateside or W. Europe. The one time I ordered from China (textbook for school....$20 instead of $140) I had no trouble. Also, when you pay with PayPal (which is HIGHLY recommended on eBay), you are automatically covered for scams. Most scams on eBay are pretty easy to spot, though. They'll usually ask for personal checks or money orders instead of secure online payments. As long as you pay with PayPal, you shouldn't worry about not getting a product. As far counterfeiting goes, though, I've never heard anything one way or the other from China. But I'd say you're definitely safe ordering stateside, and probably safe ordering from China.

Buy from power sellers and pay with paypal, NEVER with money orders or checks.
I got the Shimano R-540s for $50 shipped off ebay, and numerous other bike parts. No problems yet.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

I've bought a couple pairs of Shimano pedals from eBay sellers. No problems. Be sure that you're not getting ripped off in shipping costs--I doubt it will be $80 but a lot of eBay sellers will inflate shipping prices to make up some of the difference.

Also, check out probikekit.com -- they're an English company that often has stuff for much cheaper than you can find around the U.S. They used to do free shipping to the U.S. too--might still be the case. Anyway, I've ordered tires and cleats from them for approximately eBay prices with good success (and no, I'm not affiliated with them in any way).
