Ford Ironman 70.3 Orlando,May 2007
Did this one last spring. Like the lake swim...cool and refreshing. The bike was flat, execpt for several rollers in the last miles...no biggie. Its the run I didn't like: it was a 3-loop course, which partially ran through dry dirt and grass. I had dirt up to my knees by the time I was done. (I like trail running, but wasn't prepared for this). Also, be careful: May is unpredictable as far as heat. We'd been training in cool weather, and it was the hottest day of the year on race day...leads to electrolyte loss and cramps, etc, if you're not careful.
They used much of the same course for the Disney Olympic in Sept, I and enjoyed that one too. There's more for friends and family to do while you're racing too. It IS Disney, though, so be prepared to be overwhelmed! I would do both races again... GOOD LUCK!

I'm doing it. My first Half IM... You can view my excitement on the Thread titled ...(gulp)...
If you get a flat, and don't have a tube, Suck it up and run it in!!!
I guess I bet get signed up before it sells out.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
I was shocked its not closed out already.
I've been told that wetsuits will most likely be out because the water temp is high. Is that correct?
I will also be there and it will be my first half as well.
I´ll be there with 3 or 4 others from MN.

Did the race last year; first HIM and finished in 5:16. Lake swim was great but my AG wave start was around 1hr after the pros; it was heating up. The bike was OK but be very careful b/c I saw a few nasty bike wrecks. I have to tell this one story; funny now but a little scary then. An old man, probably on his way to church, got stuck between all the bikers. He was pissed and laying on his horn. I stayed behind him and enjoyed the draft. But what was really setting him off was that folks would pass him and bang on his car and saying things like "shut up you old man". There were a few times that I thought he was going to gun the motor and run over 100 bikers. OK back to the race. The only complaint was the run. I thought for sure we would run thru the Ft Wilderness Cabins (we stay there a lot on vacations). You loop 3 times on this path that got muddy and had rutts; very little shade. Also, plan for the heat. I'm in the AF stationed in Mississippi and conducted all of my runs at lunch. You need to hold off on the bike and if you feel great on the run, then make up the time then. Sorry for the thesis.
I'm doing this one. Did it last year as my first HIM. There was a mysterious fog over the bike which kept it really cool- of course the run got unrelentingly hot.
Who's going? Only two weeks left....I cant wait.
