I'm planning on racing IM Arizona in Spring 2008 but I also want to get in an ultramarathon before I graduate. I've been considering running the 25th Mountain Masochist in late OCT/early NOV with one of my Army officers. Given that the two races are six months apart, will running the Masochist screw with my IM training? I'm planning on adopting a running heavy training plan for the summer and fall leading up to the Masochist but incorporating swims and long rides into the mix as well to keep up a multisport base. I have a friend on my running club who ran the race less than a month ago and has been back out on the trails for regular runs for the past two weeks or so.

Just to give you some perspective I've ran two marathons (3:17PR) and one Ironman (10:49). I completed Florida on 4 Nov and have been back to regular training (aerobic base of course) for the past 2.5 weeks.

Will the Ultra screw up your IM training? No

I don't see why you'd train for much more than 6 months for an IM, seeing that you already have a good base. And you've already done an IM, so you have a little bit of experience there also.

Do It.

Is MM your first Ultra?..I've run the MM course but not done the race...It's difficult. I don't think you'd have a problem unless you trash yourself physically on the course (Ankle sprain, blown knee...that sort of thing)
6 months is too long to focus on IM training considering your base so no it won't screw up your training...keeping the long rides is a good idea too..Use long rides to replace some of your long runs...it will help minimize the pounding.
I've had some of my best 50 milers after a summer of IM training...not sure how it will work in the reverse.
Good Luck!
