Of course this guy was doing his share of reducing his impact on the enviroment , by shortening his life, when he was hitting the crack pipe.

So...to save the environment I need to start smoking and drinking and driving while under the influence and take part in all kids of dnagerous behavior?

Take a look at the original paper. I think that the very short NPR story took this guy very much out of context, as did I when I first read the clip. I don't think that this guy believes that being fat overweight, unhealthy and a automobile focused society is actually better for this world. He designs bikes and scooters. I think he was doing what he was trained to do as an engineer and scientist and taking a unbiased look a different side of energy impact that one would not normally think of and opening it up to argument.

Great research paper, though it hasn't been submitted to any peer-review journal as far as i can tell. I would have expected a little more from NPR.

The armchair engineers commenting on the NPR site are a worth a read, keeping in mind that these are probably everyday Tom and Jerry's critiqueing a Prof. of Mech Engineering and Chair of Operations and Information Managment. Funny.
