So I'm getting ready for the Christmas reading list.

I'm looking to get my marathon times down this next year and trying an ultra. Besides the obvious... run a lot, I'm looking for some other good information.

Just wondering what books people have found useful and not useful on the topic.

Going Long by Gordo Byrn and Joe Friel

It's more tri specific, but has very good information in regards to endurance racing in general.

I have found good things in the Triathlete's Guide to Run Training by our own Ken Mierke and Daniel's Running Formula by Jack Daniels (it doesn't involve a hangover). However, I haven't read all of either of those yet, but more used them as reference.

I agree, Advanced Marathoning by Pete Pfitzinger. It is the best running specific book I have read.

Hal Higdon write some good marathoning books, Advanced Marathoning is also a favorite. I'm currently reading Running Through the Wall, which is a bunch of collected stories from Ultra's, I picked it up as inspiration, but it's also good information because you get to hear both good and bad experiences, which for ultra's is a better teaching tool than set planning.
Also, there if you want any humor, take a look at I Run Therefore I Am . . . NUTS.
It has a great collection of the stories that define us semi-insane people who do endurance sports.

Ken Mierke's book "Triathlete's guide to run training" is pretty good. Great intro to form work.

has anyone read Zen Running? I read the total immersion book (for swimming) and the author recommended that book for running so just curious if anyone has any thoughts on that?

For a pure running specfic book, this pretty much has it all. Not exactly a light read at 900+ pages but it's an excellent resource book for training, running mechanics, injury prevention, history etc.
