I'm really nervous about this.
A lot of us have been there - I know I was. Best advice is to get some lessons or what I did was to get the TI DVD and work through the drills. It takes time to relax in the water and feel comfortable, but it will get you there! Good luck.

Hey Craigery I'll see you there in '07.
I live in NJ.
It is a lot of fun and a great crowd.
You have plenty of time to work on your swimming.
See if there is a masters swim class near you or take some adult lessons at a local YMCA.
Nothing to it, but to do it
I think the best thing to do would be to get lessons and try the TI stuff. Also, get to the pool as frequently as possible from now until you get the hang of it - and then keep swimming frequently. Five days per week or more if you can, even if it is just for 15 minutes. Muscle memory is the key as you are learning these new drills and putting them together. Try switching to backstroke before you get out of breath so then you don't have to worry about your breathing until you are more comfortable in the water? Keep swimming and don't let yourself get frustrated over it. You can do it!
Thanks for the advice and support. It helps. I'm going to go swimming again tomorrow.
I'd recommend the lessons to. I just started swimming early this year and was in a similar place. I took regular group lessons at the local Y and it was an amazing improvement.
Total Immersion Book + DVD to start.
Then I recomend also lessons.
That was my way out of where you are right now. (I think many of us have been there)
Hyperactive Trifueler!!!! (I refuse to let the status go :p)
Again, thanks guys.
I'm getting the TI stuff for christmas from my wife.
just keep at it man. I posted the same question about 8 months ago. I did a full oly and was 7mins faster than i expected in the water. Just keep at it. do the drills/lessons/ and stay determined.
About the old guy pumping out the lengths at the pool. The one thing i learned in the lead up to my first tri was to swim your own race. The guys in the pool were all lashing out really quick laps and i used to try keeping up with them, usually ending up out of breath really quickly. Then someone here made me notice that these guys are doing 100m swims, not a mile or even a half mile at a time. Find your own pace, your own breathing, and become comfortable in the water. The pool can be a very intimidating place. Make sure that you feel like YOU own it when you go in. That mentality changed my swim workouts big time. Confidence is huge in the pool. just enjoy it-it's great really!

Thanks! I followed your guys advice. I've been in the pool every day since tuesday and again tomorrow. I felt really good today. It was a big confidece builder. I slowed it down a lot and concentrated on breathing. I was still getting really winded. I'm going to try to slow down a little more and see if i can do more than two laps. I asked my wife for the TI products for Christmas. I'm looking forward to getting them. Again, thank you for the the kick in the pants to keep at it and the words of encouragment. It really means a lot to me.

I'm doing the NYC triathlon in July 07. I'm confident in my running and cycling but not at ALL in my swimming. I've been working on swimming and I cant swim down and back in a 25m pool. I get about 3/4 the way down the pool and I feel like I am either running out of oxygen or I start hyperventalating. I guess I am having trouble with breathing. I got really discouraged. There was an older guy at the pool who was doing lap after lap after lap. I wanted to ask him for pointers but he never stopped. Any suggestions? I am also just starting, do I just need to keep doing it get my body in better shape or is it a problem with my breathing?
