Ok just to say im coming from a beginners view, this is my first "Off season/base training" I've just had my VO2/blood LT test done and was wondering about base aerobic zone training.

I know my aerobic zone goes to 159 (running), with my LT at 183, max of 194. Also they say on the bike lower all these by 8-12 bpm, so Aerobic to 149.

My question is biking on the road ie not on the trainer, should I consider a long ride with my average hr at 149 the best or should I really be working to vigilantly monitor my hr and not let it go above 149 and hence my average of course would be a bit lower than that due to hills etc?

Thanks in advance.

I think for offseason/base work, a ceiling hr is a good option. I heard Gordo talking about it on his blog. go here for more: gordoworld.com

Great question, Harry. If you are doing base building, you do not want your HR to exceed that aerobic max of 149. Now, you can try and average 149 for an entire ride, but as you stated, that would require you to most likely exceed 149 for a period of time to offset time spent below. That's ok as an average is still an aaverage, but don't work that hard regularly. You are better off have an average of say 142-146 on the majority of your base rides. You WILL get faster at that HR if you train this way :).

as everyone said its CEILING HR the moment you go anaerobic you are crashing your whole Base training sesion.

A few time ago I read an article by mark allen that said that if you are base training and go anaerobic it will take your body aprox. 9 hours to be able to get back to normal and burn only fat.

I don´t know if I remeber exactly the whole article, but the basic idea was that! I bet dr. rios or Kona could go and give you a good lecture about this.

Our school has a really strong cycling program that almost every year brings a kid from Cat V to Cat I/II in a single season (I wish I had time to train with them more!)...and a huge part of the training is just base. The coach won't let anyone ride fast...no sprints at all. Just keep that HR ceiling in mind and as soon as you add speed work to your training in a few months, your times will plummet. Good luck!
