How many of you trifuels out there have to travel for work? And if so are you able to stick to your training plan? The reason I ask is because I have to travel to Jacksonville, FL for business in a couple weeks and it seems like when I am away for business I dont seem to train with the same intesity or I can not find a good place to train. So how does everyone else do it?

I will always at the very least run--that is easy enough. There is usually always a treadmill --or if need be an "out and back" run. You can bring a bungee to swim with in a dinky pool too, there is always a way.

Well, I'm here in a hotel in N.C. this week. I will always bring gear for running and swimming. I will look on-line for health clubs in the area, before traveling. Often clubs will have discounted temporary memberships. In the off-season it is easy to be a bit lax. But I also travel during the season and have been able to stay on top of my workouts - just have to be flexible.

I think I sometimes get better workouts on the road. Get to know your area and like RV said be flexible.

I'm fortunate enough to travel to a couple of places that have onsite gyms... once the meetings are done everyone knows where I'm going. I've also found some great running and biking routes just by getting out and exploring. The pools usually end up costing you but once you find one it's worth it; check out USMS affiliated pools in you're travel area.

People know I'm a little "different" so once my duty is done they pretty much leave me alone; one guy even loans me his bike when I'm in town.

I have a trip next week and I'm actually looking forward to it. Life on the road can be sweet!

I usually search around before I go to see what the options might be. Last summer I went to Virginia Beach for the week before my first tri. With a little searching I was able to find a local bike shop that had regular club rides throughout the week and a local Y to use. I have to say one of the best things I found is the Y membership, there is typically one around and most will honor memberships from other Y's. I've used mine in three different states at this point.

Thanks for the help everyone. I have a Y membership so I guess I will do a search and see if there is one in Jacksonville. JamieM where did you ride in Va beach? Was it Fat Frogs?

I guess I just put my shoes on and go out and run. You can always find a place to run and if I find a pool or even a gym with a stationary bike that works too...

I usually look for a local Y as well. Most Y's have an "away" program, so your membership is accepted nationwide. Just check online for one nearby. If they're not part of the program, they'll usually let you use their facility for a small cost.

Or you can post the city you're going to be in - I'm sure there are plenty of trifuelers out there that can point you in the right direction for runs/rides.

There is a good site that you can look at called athleticmindedtraveler.com. I travel about 200 days a year, sometimes even more and I go both within US and internationally. Obviously, running is the easiest thing to do on the road. I usually try to plan ahead a little bit before going to different places where I have not been yet. I use runtheplanet.com a lot to see where people are running. It's a pretty good resource.

I do really good training on the road. In fact, I have trained for every race I have participated in, including Ironman Arizona and NYC Marathon, while traveling. It definitely is more difficult than training at home but it's also a lot of fun to train in constantly different environments. In fact, on Saturday I'm flying out to Brazil for about 18 days for some work meetings and I'll be running in Sao Paulo and Campinas.

One other thing that is a lot of fun is looking for races in places where you are getting sent for work. It's an awesome way to meet people in different cities.

You can always pack running shoes, and do an out and back for time.

the site athleticmindedtraveler.com is good too.

At the very least plan your recovery week around travel and get some extra rest.

Nothing to it, but to do it
