Recommend a training plan, please
Since you are a beginner I suggest you buy yourself a copy of Joe Friel´s " The Triathletes Training Bible".
You will have lots of excelent info there that will make you understand periodization and will teach you how to create a training plan based on your own needs.
If you are realy new and have to learn to swim and to run. I also recommend buying yourself Total Immersion book and dvd and take time to learn technique before starting your training plan.
Also for your running. I used Pose Method of Running Book and DVD and have been running injury free ever since!

hey axl, welcome to the sport. tokal's book suggestion is a good one, I've used the training bible as well. also check out some of the plans we have on the site, there's a good sprint program in there: http://www.trifuel.com/triathlon-training/. good luck and ask if you have any questions.
also check trinewbies.com slowtwitch.com triathlete.com and beginnertriathlete.com they all generic free training plans. see which one works for you and of course adapt it to you . welcome to the sport and have fun!

Has anyone seen Joe Friels book My First Triathlon? I haven't read it, but from the reviews, it sounds much more appropriate for a beginner. After you do your first triathlon, then you might want to look at the training bible, but its probably a bit overkill before your first tri (or season of tris - read it next fall after your races are over).

I haven't read the total immersion either, but plenty of people on this site have learned how to swim from it.
[QUOTE=PoorAxl;57109 I want also to follow suitable plan, so that I can force myself to exercise.
difficulties to run more than 2-3 miles at once. I'm 6 ft./200lb.
Thanks a lot for your help.
Forcing yourself ... ? You have to have desire, passion and truly accept change. Feelings of force are not healthy and will only lead to failure.

Eric Harr has a book out called Triathlon Training in Four Hours a Week. This was a great resource for me when I began to prepare for my first race. It is an easy read and very insightful.

This book has plans for varying levels and at different distances.
Sign up for a race - having it on your calendar helps to motivate you, if you need it.

Thanks for all your inputs.
I looked aroud the trifuel and trinewbies. There are nice training programs, but all of them expect 5-6 days a week training. I do not think I am able to do this now. I tried to start, but from that time I feel very tired, so I exercise mainly just during the weekend. You can see my training log.
I understand that I need to slowly increase the volumes, add more days and start swimming as well. Good thing is, I have bought new running shoes and I am down 5lbs now ;-). I still can see the chance I can do it.
I would like to finish my first triathlon ... some day ;)
PoorAxl... You can do this bro. I just started training in Oct. I am 5'10" and was 227 when I first started. Like you I was a occasional runner and swimmer but I do ride a bike pretty often. Since then I have dropped 20 lbs. and I ran in my first 5k in Nov. Don’t get discouraged. My advice is to take it slow because some times if you push to hard you will over train and cause injuries and that won’t be a good thing. Like Rob Schneider always says "You can do it!"

I'd suggest the book "Training Plans for Multisport Athletes" by Gale Bernhardt. I would follow the Multisport Fitness Plan (the maximum number of training hours in a week is 8, with most around 6-7) for at least 6 months before you decide to bust into more formal triathlon training. If you can't make all the workouts, that's OK, as long as you in general try to stay on the plan.
On this relatively low amount of training, it would be safe for you to lose weight, if that is one of your objectives.
Sounds like you have a sensible objective in mind. Take your first year to learn about the sport, learn about proper nutrition (I highly recommend Monique Ryan's books) and get your body "ready to train." Then you'll be in solid condition to step things up a bit in 2008.
Triathlete's Training Bible is a good resource, but only when you are ready to get a bit more geeked out in the sport. Don't let anyone rush you into things sooner than you are comfortable, since you need to enjoy the process if you are to do well in the sport.
this is a good one:

hi,
for me I try to swim a lot because that's my favourite part so I swim around 20K a week and I try to train around 4 hours on bike (in the street or a room) and after I try to run around 3-4 hours a week. finally I do 13 hours a week. But my issue is to don't be tired after swimming and after cycling that's why I run less than the other sports. I did triathlon during 6 years in France (I'm french) but here I'll do my first triathlon in may so I hope my training will works.

Second that on Gale's book. It provides a sense of rhythm and framework to build out bigger and better training plans. Since she refer's to Friel's text, it's not a bad idea to get both as they are somewhat complimentary.

I bought the bible when I first started a few years ago and the pages are starting to fall out and the cover is about gone, I read it that much. If you have the money to invest then check out ebay and try to get an indoor bike trainer, I recommend cycleops fluid 2 with some of the trainright DVD's. (about $250) They will teach you proper technique as well as build your base endurance. Another bonus is that if you aren't a big cyclist then the winter and rain rides will not be fun for you (or safe for that matter)
I was a beginner not that long ago and will gladly help if you have any more questions

No Kevin, I am not a pro at all.
Based on the training information I got from this and other web sites, I created several training plans, but ... I followed them just 1-2 weeks and then it always screwed up due to other things I needed to do (work, family, ...). So I started to plan just the weekly amount of training not based on daily basis. Once a week I ride my bike to work and back (40 miles) and the rest I go running into the forest where I live, which is the easiest way of training for me. And I try to increase the weekly mileage from week to week by 5-10%, I am at 22 miles/week now. Unfortunately I can not find a time for swimming.
How far can I get with such a training? I take it as a endurance base, that can help me to train better later and also as the way to loose some pounds (5 pounds in 1 month is good, isn't it? :-))
Thanks

It will do just find for health/weight goals... congrats on finding a way to make fitness fit in your life!
As far as with tris... you'll be able to finish. Depends on your genes how competative you'd be though... most of us are not very competative with that little focused training. But if you are in it for fun, you should be able to finish if the distance tri you pick is similar to the distances you find yourself doing. Your main difficulty will be the swim since it is very technique focused, and for me the fastest one I lose technique in, and so getting in the pool regularly is important. I also try to be on the bike more than once a day.
I read somewhere that for running/biking 2x per week will maintain current fitness, and 3x a week for swimming to maintain. More than that to improve. I'm sure this (like most other guidelines) is just that though -- a guideline -- and will be individual.
I just started as well (literally, like...two days ago) and I'm using this plan to get a good endurance base:
Couch to 5k is a good plan if you are just getting started and have the time before your race to get running (literally!) first. I've heard many many good things of it, and recommend it whenever people who are not active tell me they are trying to get into running.

Hi tri-athletes,
I have decided to change my life and do some exercise. It will be long long way for me to finish at least my first sprint triathlon so I strongly need to stay motivated. That's why I decided to log on this website, write my own training log and share my experience with others. I want also to follow suitable plan, so that I can force myself to exercise.
Can someone help me to recommend any suitable plan?
I am occasional runner and swimmer, not a good biker. I can run 1 mile in 8 minutes, however I have difficulties to run more than 2-3 miles at once. I'm 6 ft./200lb.
Thanks a lot for your help.
