swimming snorkels

Does anyone have an opinion on using swimming snorkels for training? My breathing is horrible. I am trying to go as far as I can without taking a breath because it screws up my mechanics and causes quick fatique. I need to increase my endurance (which sucks) while I am still trying to correct my breathing. I am also very uncomfortable in the water to begin with, so I need a confidence booster. Do you think a snorkel would be advantageous?

Thanks

I started with a snorkel. While I am really comfortable in the water. My freestyle pretty much sucked when I started. When I first started swimming laps about 4 months ago, I couldn't swim 50 yards without feeling like I was gonna die. Now, I really have no idea how far I could swim. I get bored before I get tired. I swam with a snorkel for about 2 months. I tried to work on my technique more then anyhting with it. Also, you will build up your endurance in your shoulders and get used to being in the water. I say go for it.

IMHO no. You need to learn the right way to do it first, then incorporate the toys/tools. Focus more on form initally until you can comfortably swim (with proper breathing) then gradually build up the time/lengths you can do so with correct form. Are you trying to breath to one side or bilaterally? Do you have a masters swim group or access to swim lessons in your area?

I vote no. I started out as a terrible swimmer. I did everything wrong and I had no swimming endurance to speak of. I read up and watched and listened to sources on proper technique and practiced it. I think the snorkel is an unecessary crutch. I actually did consider getting one too but I think they look dorky so I didn't use one. Technique, form, endurance will improve with practice - save the dough and have one less piece of gear to strap on your head... goggles, cap, ear plugs... that's plenty.

Well,

you've got to train the way you race... and you won't race with a snorkel... Train the RIGHT way!

Nah you can't race with one then don't train with one. That's the equivelant of training with a motorcycle instead of a bike.

the ONE time I can see using it is if you are using a bungee and training while traveling or on vacation and only have a small pool as an option as it works better. For normal training, no.
