Hi guys I'm new in the tri family and the website is very good... lots of info.
I finished my first tri a few weekends ago (A 1/2 IM). All my friends told me that I was crazy, and they were wright I actually finished it in 6 hrs. I was pretty down about it I thought I could do better... but hey it was my first tri ever. I guess I need some more time to train... cause I got hooked on ......
But here is my question... I raced on a borrowed bike since I do not have my own, and realized it was too big for me so the bike leg just killed my back...I know I need to get a bike but not sure what to get... I have a guy who is selling a guru 2004 aluminum frame w/carbon fork and wishbone equiped w/dura ace and mavic cosmo carbone wheels.... I do not know much about bikes and I do not have much money to spend cause I am married and you all know how that works .....
but I think this is a good bike for 1200.00 usd what do you think......

Sounds pretty good. The most important aspect of a bike purchase is fit. So regardless of how great the deal is (as you found out riding a "free" bike) it may not be for you. See if you can get sized at a local shop on the same bike - if they match size wise then second hand saves you alot of $$. Look at how much you can afford, type fo bike etc then narrow it down to a few brands as each will likely fit diffierently - Road vs, Tri geometry is another thought - search the threads i'm sure there are plenty of bike purchase threads. Nice job finishing the Half as your first. Half IM was my first as well.

I'm guessing that you are new to the biking part based on the fact you are borrowing one. Biking takes a long time to get good at. I am only 2 years into tris and still have a long ways to go the bike. The longer the race (1/2IM/IM), the more important the bike becomes. You have to be a strong biker to be able to bike that distance well and still set up a good run.

Repeat after me:

FIT FIT FIT FIT FIT FIT FIT FIT FIT FIT FIT FIT FIT

Get it fit!!

If the bike is from a friend, I think your friend would have no problem with you taking the bike to the best bike fitter in the area (kudos if he is a tri fitter) and having him make sure the bike fits you.

The LBS shouldnt charge you for this - its a simple standover test to make sure your on the right size bike. If the bike is a good fit, the LBS will additional business later when your bring the bike in for the detailed fitting. The fitting should cost somewhere around $100-250 depending o the level of detail the fitter goes into.

If you need to find a fitter, I would check with the local tri specific bike shops in your area, or go onto the websites of any of the mutisport clubs in your area and see if they have a forum like this.
