Anybody know what the is the minimum water temperature for an open water swim ?

I found some european rulebooks that have that limit set at 11 C (52 F), is there a set limit in the US.

Thanks.

I'm guessing for a triathlon? Most of the time the races are in the summer so the water is usually in the 60's and 70's. Although Ca 70.3 did have a water temp of 55 in March.

yeah I remember a 53F swim for Oxnard tri in March. You definitely want a wetsuit and a couple of swim caps or a neoprene beanie. cold water hurts.

Anytime the water gets into the low 60s you'll know it! I don't know if/what the limit is. I would assume there is some rule for safety sake.

I have swam in water as cold as 45f and never had a problem. I did Alcatraz this year and the water temp was around 53 I think. It was fine. There were a couple of people that didn't even have wetsuits on. I know a guy that never wears a wetsuit and he will swim in low 40 degree water. He is crazy.

Hey AMF..
USAT rule 4.4 says that Age group Participants can wear wetsuits in water up to and including 78 degrees F. without penalty.
From 78 to 84 degrees they may wear a wetsuit at their discretion but will not be eligible for awards.
Wetsuits are not allowed at or above 84 degrees.
As you can see, it's a pretty wide range.
Hope that answers your question...

We are holding a tri next February in 50F water and I had some complaints about that temp being below the minimum allowed, but I see that is not the case.

Thanks.

I really have a hard time with that. I think at low 40's hypothermia would be coming on VERY QUICKLY. I guess there is always exceptions. The am usually the only guy out there with out a wet suit at 62 degree's I couldn't imagine another 10 degree's down.
