I am in a quandary. I have been training with the same coach and the same group of people for that last year, everyday for about 3 hours a day. Now our coach is moving on to coach the elite members of our squad only and a few other big names, he has offered me a spot to train with the new elite team but they are quite a step above me. He has only extended the invite to a select few of our old team.

the others are going to another well know coach who i have worked with in the past.

my question is: do i go to the squad where i will most likely get hammered every session or do i go with my friends where i will excel but "maybe" not to the level i would training with elite athletes, keeping in mind I'm a consistent top 20 finisher in my age group, not an elite racer.

thanks

Get hammered.
The opportunity to work with the best doesn't come along everyday.

'sides, it is easier to step down than to step up.
You'd be a fool to turn down this offer.

If you trained with the elite group, you'd push yourself to a higher level. Past top 20 in your age group. You could at least tri it and see how it goes. Give it a month and re-evaluate.

Or you could hang out with your friends and continue enjoying that comraderie and helping your friends excel. Family is important.

It's a tough choice. I guess it ultimately depends on your future goals for tri, your social life, and every other factor in your life and which aligns better.

Good luck! Let us know what you decide.

Go for it. Training with those more advanced is the best way to take your game to the next level. Sounds like an awesome opportunity!

Would you be content being the big fish in the small pond? Myself, I don't mind being the little fish in a big pond if it means opportunity. You can always give it a shot and say you gave it everything you had. If it's not enough, that's alright and you can take a cannonball leap back into that little pond.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Got to agree with everyone else, go for it and push yourself. So you get hammered for a while, you'll also be improving along the way.

If it fits into your life, take the challenge... you only learn from what you do.

Good luck with the decision.

What do you want to get out of your training?

I'm going to assume that you want to get better. So, ride with the big dogs. You may get hammered at first, but after a while I'm sure you'll catch up if you keep at it.

How do you think you got to where you are right now? I don't think it was by riding with the kids on their bmx bikes. I'm sure you worked hard to get where you are now. Work a little harder and you'll be on that next level.

OK folks, so after all your advice today i went out with the pros on the bike, pack of 5. we did a team time trial over 50km in an out and back style on the local highway. ave speed 47Kph thats around 30Mph for you imperial people.

I held on till around the 40k mark but did not have the legs on the hill and fell off the back of the pace line. They waited for me at the end then we did a warm down. Some of the boys said they were surprised to still see me at the turn around (thanks guys!) but we all started just trying to hang on to the group, so I'll try it for a month and see how it goes.
Then we just cruised for 20k as a warm down.....i can barley walk!

Nice goin' Iron Man, way to hang! That's some wicked mph.

Besides maybe feeling a little sore today, you should be feeling pretty good about yourself. Keep up the good work.
