Got a question about good ole HR training. After reading an article by Mark Allen on how he trained with HR and was able to get down to an aerobic sub-6 mile, I'm interested in trying it out. I'm getting a Polar S120 with HR %. My question is: At what percentages are recovery, aerobic, and anaerobic zones. I looked at some sites and it looks like 60-70% is recovery, 70-80% is aerobic, 80-90 is anaerobic, and 90-100 is balls to the wall. Is this right?

Your best bet will be to actually KNOW what YOUR specific HR zones are rather than use %'s. Go get a LT or VO2 test or maybe BBB will post here and share a few of the other popular self test methods. HR training absolutely works if you do it correctly and the only way to do that is have accurate initial data.

Hey, ya we got lots of posts on how to test for LT and HRmax. MaverickUNC, you been around for a while, you should know man. Aside from having the lab test (which is best) do some searching and then use the links to figure out your zones. Best of luck and ask if you have a q's:

HRzones by Joe Friel: Based on Lactate Threshold Heart Rate (LTHR)
LTHR = ~80-85% of HRmax.

Zone: Percentage of LTHR
1 65% - 81% Recovery
2 82% - 88% Aerobic
3 89% - 93% Tempo
4 94% - 100% SubThreshold
5A 101% - 102% SuperThreshold
5B 103% - 105% Aerobic Capacity
5C 106%+ Anaerobic Capacity
