Hey man, how's the training going?
First thing, unless you're comfortable sleeping with one eye open, I wouldn't recomend the hostel in the city idea.
If you're flying into Newark you could consider the link below. The Sheraton is right on the river, Jersey side, and the ferry to midtown, 5minutes, is right out the front door. The ferry drops at 34th and Westside highway, take the free bus to Penn station, hope on the 1, 2 or 3 subway to the race. Probably cheaper than staying in the city.

But, if your craving the whole NYC experience you're going to want to stay in the city. The Hilton's on the fringe of the theatre district so you're probably paying a few extra rubles for that and the name.
The race is on the upper west side, swim starts at 100th St, so you may want to do a hotel search for Upper Westside, W80s to 90s streets, those would be walking distance.
If beads sees the thread he may have some good ideas too.

Thank you so much for the help! I'm going to be driving from Michigan. This is my first Triathlon and I'm excited. Training is going alright. I'm already a cyclist so I'm not worried about that. I'm just starting to run and swim. I'm doing my first 5k race on Thanksgiving morning. Should be fun. I've got a swimming coach too. So far its going well. I'm just working on a decent base for now. Again, thank you for your help. I basically needed to know where to look for the hotels to be located. Thanks a ton and good luck with training.
I'm participating in the NYC triathlon. I have never been to NYC before and I'm really excited. Since I've never been there, I dont know the streets and where things are at. The host hotel is The Hilton and its WAY WAY out of my budget. We're considering staying in a hostel. Any suggestions on where to stay or a general area? The hilton is located at 1335 Avenue of the Americas, between 53rd & 54th Street. This means nothing to me really. So basically, I would like to be in an area near there or be able to get there easily. I suppose the subway might make it easy but I am not familiar with them. Thank you so much in advance.
