I have an '05 Giant TCR Composite 3 bike. It is a compact design with 36/50 upfront. I would like to upgrade to 39/52. Can I purchase just a crankset (such as Shimano Ultegra 6600). What else would I have to upgrade? What other cranksets would be recommended??

Why in the world do you want to change from a compact?????????

If you're just looking to do this to change the gearing, swapping in a new cassette in the rear would be much easier.

Seriusly though, why do you want a normal cran as opposed to a compact?

You need the crankset, corresponding Bottom Bracket and a normal front deraileur (either 150, ultegra, or dura ace) to complete the switch.

If my specs are right on the TCR 3, then it has a 50/36 Compact Crank and a SRAM 12/26 cassette.
I agree with the others that you should try swapping cassettes first.
SRAM makes an 11/23 or 11/21 cassette.
This will save you some money and it’s a good idea to have a few different cassettes anyway even if you do swap cranks later on.
Now if you just want to go with a regular crank anyway…. IMO get a Dura-Ace 53/39.
If you like looking at bike gear ratios based on different crank / cassette combinations, here is a really neat link.

I agree -- swap cassettes. It will save you time and weight. I converted to Compact this summer and love it!

It feels like there is a gap between gears while cruising. If I keep the same cadence as others in what appears to be similar gears up front and rear, I am going slower. I have to keep on switching front and rear simultaniously to make up for that gap to keep the same pace and prevent the chain from being on too much of an angle.
I suppose the 11/23 would help out here...?
