Lately I've been running to the gym and lifting weights for 30 minutes or swimming for 30-45 minutes then leaving the gym and finishing my run. Do you think splitting the run up like this has the same benefits as running non-stop for the same distance? I started doing this because it saves time but don't know if I'm getting as good a run workout as before. Once a week I do my long run non-stop.

A number of folks think that split workouts are a good idea....I'm not sure I do.
The reason is that many feel that running after having lifted weights can be a negative.Running being the most physically damageing thing we do...on top of a good lifting session can lead to a risk of injury. How much are you running prior to your lifiting session may detract from your ability to get the maximum benifit from the lift. An easy mile...ok. Anything more than that...nope. The most benificial ,I feel, is to warm up with a short run or spin on the bike...lift then finish off with a non-load bearing exercise to cool down..spinning again or a short session in the pool.

Jeff, I don't think it is a problem to do this workout every now and then to save time. I actually think there is a benefit to split workouts sometimes. When I build for Ironman races I will often do split runs to break up the pounding, and get some rest in between.
I do think that you probably need to be running more all at once if possible. There is a different type of fatigue from running for a steady period of time, than if you stop in between. I also believe that for some people it takes a while to warm up and get into a good "running rythym". I often don't start feeling good on my runs till 40 minutes in.

Get in what you can, it is all good, but maybe do a longer loop to the gym and get the full run, and hitch a ride home. I think your running fitness would benefit.
