Hey there.

At my work we have a point system, where when we do good things we get rewarded for it. I saved up enough points to order a Garmin Forerunner 101 GPS training toy. I checked the gear guide but could only find info on the 301 and 305.

Obviously the 101 is an earlier model. Does anybody have any history with this product? Is it any good? The price was right, that's for sure.:D

Thanks.

The Forerunner 101 is a fairly old model of those, you are right.

The 101 is the basic model designed for runners. It uses regular AAA batteries. I don't believe you can upload from it to your computer. Full info on it can be found at: http://www.garmin.com/products/forerunner101/

The 201 is the step up from that, and it includes a recharable special battery, a bit more functionality, and I believe you can get your data from it to your computer. (http://www.garmin.com/products/forerunner201/)

The 301 was the next step up, adding in a heart rate monitor -- http://www.garmin.com/products/forerunner301/.

The 305 is the new version of the 301 -- with a new body design, a bit shorter battery life, faster satelite connections, etc (http://www.garmin.com/products/forerunner305/).

I use and love my 301. My training partner had a Foretrex 101 (similar, but a bit more hiking and less running focused), Forerunner 301 and 305 -- he likes all of them (but can testify that the 305 shouldn't be worn on the wrist while swimming!).

As for if the 101 is good for you, it will depend on what you want out of it. If you just want to know your speed and distance during workouts, and your averages after, it will do that. However, to save the info you will have to copy the data you want to a log (such as the one on trifuel) on your own.

If you want to keep complete records, including the GPS data, you'd have to have a device that could link up with your computer, which .

I have a 101 and have used it for going on 2 years now. Works great, as Kiylee said it is very basic, but I have 2 Polar HR monitors to do the other stuff.

It's simple but I like it. Sometimes I wish I could upload the data to the computer but it is useful. Sometimes I just let it track my run and sometimes I use the training partner feature if I have a pace goal I want to meet.

i have a 201, and am very happy with it. the 101 won't upload like the 201, but the gps unit itself works very well.

Thanks every one. I was kind of worried that I might have been getting a sundial instead of a watch. But it sounds like the 101 wont be too bad, as I have a HRM already.
