If You Were Me...
how would you structure your race schedule based on the following races? Which would you do/not do? Keep in mind that my A #1 race of the season is IMKY in late August. And for some background info, this will be my 3rd season of triathlons-having completed sprints, olys, and 1 HIM in two years.-Jan6 8 mile Winter Race
-March18 Half-Marathon/ or Sprint Off-road DU
April 21 Century Ride
April 28 Marathon/Half-Marathon
May 21 Olympic Tri
June 17 Sprint Tri
June 23 Local Annual 10K
July 15 Sprint Tri
I don't really have an early season HIM close enough to do so I'm wondering if I could get some insight into what you guys would do with this schedule. Add events, take away events. Do my own HIM during a long weekend? Thanks for any insight.
I went from sprints directly to IM--I have to say a sprint tri while fun, is not REALLY going to prep you for an IM. you would probably be better off doing your long training on the weekends(assuming you have them to train) when you have those sprint races and focus on what ever your weakest leg is.
I know some argue against marathons--but I did 2 (earlier on) and will be doing 2 (Disney in Jan and SanDiego in early June) prior to my end of August IM. I see you have a couple scheduled and they are early enough you should be fine :)
I haven't really decided on the full or half Mary. I've got 1 Marathon (Chicago) under my belt so I already have that "confidence" factor out of the way. Thanks for the input brittda.

oh and the marathons arent "try to win the race" pace. I generally consider them just a long training run.
My suggestion (and keep in mind I'm a relative newbie!) would be to also have a longer distance tri in the summer schedule. Possibly a HIM? If not for looking at your pacing/HR for that type of distance, but also for testing out a nutrition plan in race conditions. Just a thought!

My 2 cents (WITH A RESUME) - if you are not planning anything longer that what is shown above, train right thru these races using them as a speed work out. No taper or even a day off before. Instead, a 100 mile bike ride Saturday and do the Sprint as hard as you feel you can or feel you can accomplish without injury on Sunday.

Keep your eye on the BIG prize.

Disclaimer: This is what I'd do if I were in your situation. I am in no way a coach.
Being that your goal is late August, your build is going to be June and July, which means you are going to be putting in the big miles during those months. Unless there is a HIM that you could do during that time, I'd scratch those 3 races in June/July. You aren't going to need sprint distance speed for an IM. I'd also vote for the Half Mary istead of the full. I think the recovery time for the full is too long and it would eat up too much good training time. Racing is fun, don't get me wrong, but you have to look at your end goal and analyze whether or not the training and racing is getting you to that goal.
Thanks for all of the input. I agree with ya'll on eliminating the shorter races, especially since most of the sprints/running events are actually on Saturdays. Just too little time on the weekend to waste on such a short race. I guess I'll just use those weekend for big training. Thanks again.

Personally, I would take away the june sprint tri to allow your body and MIND to recover from the sport. Rest of the events should be used as "training" events to get you mentally ready for the Half.
I'm with geek....dump the sprint in June. Road race more often as speed work.
