Pretty cool for Team Disco.

Of course I thought you meant he was going with a lime green leisure suit with lapels you could hang glide with :D

Nothing to it, but to do it

Nice. Now we just need Jan to signup with a team. Then we can see Basso, Ullrich and Vino duel it out in 07.

that is not something I expected to see, looks like the boys in blue will be insanely hard to beat

I was hoping levi would take the lead, but as stated before, no change of him beating out Basso, but Levi will definately be a strong team rider for him in the mountains, very exciting news!

Basso to Disco

In a classic outhouse-to-penthouse move, Ivan Basso has agreed to ride for Discovery Channel. The deal was confirmed yesterday by Disco director Johan Bruyneel along with co-owner Lance Armstrong, who fought back challenges from Basso while winning his sixth and seventh Tours de France.

The 28-year-old Italian signed a two-year contract for an undisclosed figure. (First reports said the deal was for three years and $6 million.) This gives Discovery a rider capable of winning the Tour after the team struggled in the 2006 race -- its first without Armstrong -- without a serious contender for the yellow jersey.

Earlier in the '06 season Basso dominated the Giro d'Italia, his first victory in a grand tour. That made him a strong favorite for the Tour but he was barred hours before the start, a victim, along with top rival Jan Ullrich, of doping allegations. The riders' names were linked to a Spain-based doping network uncovered by the police investigation called Operation Puerto.

Basso steadfastly denied guilt but wasn't allowed to race again. On Oct. 18, he and his team of three years, CSC, parted ways. Nine days later, Basso finally got some good news when Italian authorities formally announced they were shelving his case because of insufficient evidence, making him free to resume his career.

Basso is scheduled to be in Austin, Texas, on Dec. 3 for a Disco training camp, where he'll be fitted for team clothing and equipment.

There's been no public reaction yet from Levi Leipheimer, the American who left Gerolsteiner to join Discovery and, presumably, lead the team in the Tour. That role is Basso's now.

Levi might benefit in the long run from not having the outright pressure of being a team leader. And if Basso goes for the double and has any trouble in July, he'll be right there in line.
