Clipless roadbike shoes are really bringing me down.

I'm @ my wits end paying $200 for "Italian styling" when all I get is a narrow leather upper, cardboard insole, and a downhill-ski-boot latch.
They all feel like crap. Sure...there's no "bike shoe" department at Nordstrom, so we're stuck with that little selection at the LBS, or trial & error by mail-order.
I've got normal feet. Size 11.5 D I dream of a pair of decent lightweight roadbike shoes that feel like lacing up a pair of Asics. Is that possible?
What's your secret?

I am no pro, but I have Mountain Bike shoes with SPD pedals. I use them both on/off road and for my tri bike. One is lace up with a vercro strap very confy!, the other has only 2 velcro straps and is as stiff as a road shoe but not as comfy.

If you're talking about Sidi, then you must have a problem because those are the most comfortable shoes I've ever tried on. I don't own them, put I do own a pair of Nike Poggio III's that I and my feet really enjoy. I also have a pair of Specialized Trivent that my body enjoys. I haven't had a problem with comfort, or lack there of, in bike shoes. Even the $70 specialized model was pretty comfy on my feet.

Shimano 151 road shoes are a dream come true for me. You'd think with a carbon sole (STIFF) and the extreme lightweight they'd be uncomfortable, wrongggg. I have worn them on three centuries in the past 3 months and have never had sore feet. They fit like a glove, not hot spots or cramps. Everyone's foot is different, you'll just know when a the shoe is made for you

buy from performancebike.com or somewhere with a very liberal return policy, i know at performance you have like 30 days to return them so its worth a shot. They even have a wide version

I also don't like the Sidi shoes. They just dont fit my feet. Even with different insoles in them. I have Shimano (tri TR-02 model) and Diadora (road and MTB) shoes and like both a lot. Edge to the Shimano on the road.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

I tried the Specialized S-Works shoe, and LOVE them. The "Body Geometry" hype was totally true for me. I'm gonna try out the trivent now.

I tried on the Specialized tri shoes. Even half a size too small, they felt real good. If only the shop that sold the stuff was better, I would likely have gone with those instead of the Shimanos.
