Swim Paddles
I've heard mixed feelings on them. Personally, I think they make me really feel how I should bend my wrist in the water, and thus make me practice a good stroke. However, they do also slow my stroke a bit, which is not good as it is slow enough already! I use them sometimes, but not always, and make sure I do a 100 or so without them after them each time, to make myself practice that same arm positioning feeling without the aid and while it is fresh in my mind.

I don't think they should be slowing you down. When I use them I am about 10-15 sec faster on my sets

They don't slow me down, just the speed of my stroke. Since you move more water, there is more resistance, and stroke rate drops. However, you are moving more water, so you go farther per stroke, so overall speed of me in water is faster.

I use them once a week. I think they've help build my lats and shoulders with the resistance. I use the medium size so that I don't stress my arms too much. I do some sets with and some without. I also try other strokes besides freestyle (like breast stroke) for a resistance change.
On a related note, I've found that swim fins (Zoomers) and a kick board have helped me tremendously with kicking this year.

Quick question for the group. I have bee in triathlon for 3 years. Average swimmer: 33-35 for 1.2 and did 1:11 at IMLP. I see lots of folks using swim paddles but before i purchase them, can they help with strength/stroke - what is the real benefit? Thanks
