I have been active in Triathlon for several years now and completed my first Ironman in 2004/Kona. I have been struggling for the past 9 mos to a year...with growing and continuous pain and fatigue along w/many other symptoms. Any Triathlete's out there ever or who is struggling with this? Do you have any tips or ideas on how to move forward and continue with training and racing. Really needing some guidance here. Hope to hear from someone soon. Take care all....Hope to see you at the Races.;)

those symptoms are also related to overtraining, but I'd check with a doc if it seems more than that...

Where are you having pain? When do you usually have it, i.e. morning, night, after run/bike/swimming? What kind of pain, i.e. swollen, red, sharp, dull, aching? What relieves it - ice, NSAIDs, hot pack/heating pad/hot tub, rest, exercise? How often are you exercising and how much? How many rest days a week do you give yourself?

How much sleep are you getting a night on average? Is it quality sleep or interrupted sleep? How do you eat? Depression can sometimes manifest somatically through physical symptoms. Do you feel depressed or unmotivated? What are your other symptoms?

There are lots of sources of pain and fatigue. These are a lot of questions you're doctor would ask you. Therefore, it might be a good idea to go see your doctor to determine the source(s).

Without knowing the answers to the above questions and many others, it's hard to tell what the reason could be. Perhaps Dr. Rios will have some suggestions or more questions.

Good Luck!

Your Tri Nurse,

Toni

I 've had similar symptoms. Went to the doctor and a blood test later I was diagnoised with low thyroid. Within a month of starting the medication I was back to normal.
But I agree with Toni, you should see a doctor because a simple blood test could make all the difference. Don't let yourself suffer.

It could be any number of things, most likely something easy to identify and remedy.

Play it safe and see a Dr.
You may also want to check your iron levels. Low levels present with fatigue, and muscle soreness. If you get blood work done, ask to have your ferritin levels checked. Endurance athletes rely on iron stores. You may not be anemic, yet still have a ferritin level that is low. Low for athletes may read as in the normal range for the sedentary public.
Read this article, or google "iron deficiency in runners" and you will get plenty of information on the subject.

Off topic, but I'm impressed that you did Kona as your first IM. Most of us can only dream...

My dear friend:
Very interesting the name of your thread, the reason, fibromyalgia is a clinical entity that might be tracky to to diagnose, and requires particular maneuvers and interrogation and some tests to find it.
Now, all the Trifuelers who posted here, are right, in the fact that the differential diagnosis, of chronic fatige and aches is really wide. Best thing is to get check by your primary care provider, some lab work, and maybe on top of all, get some rest.
Let us know how it goes

Dr. Rios.ec

I almost completly forgot that I had posted here....Just thought I would update.
First...I wanted to comment that my husband is from Ecuador...moved to the states when he was 11....we met in the Marine Corps back in 1990, have been married for 16 years now!

Lots of good advice was given to me....I appreciate all of your encouragement. It would take too long to update all details but in a quick update it seems that many of my symptoms where a manifestation of the extreme stress and depression that was associated with my husbands last deployment to Iraq....and the "circumstances" that were added to an already extremly stressful situation. I just wasn't satisfied with what the Md's were telling me....ie: get used to it....slow down, like forever.....and enjoy what you have accomplished thus far. So I did something New....I started seeing a holistic Dr....who began a much thorough/detailed look into "me". So we changed many diatery things immedietly and went on no excessive pt for some time....basically took a sabatical from triathlon for a time...to allow my body to deal with the stress that was already upon me....and to allow time for the present symptoms to subside. Took some to time to seek out counseling and just have family time and couple time for a while. It seems to have worked...looking back. I also choose to put my three children 15, 14, 12....into public school....we had always homeschooled. I am not sure that it was any one of these choices that made a difference...but rather collectivly they have made a huge difference. It has been a year since I have trained seriously....and that alone causes it's own "mental" issues within me, but I am at a point now where I believe I can begin to step back into my training and regain my fitness (which is all but gone right now)....but I will enjoy watching my body remorph back into a very healthy TriBod!!! Although lifes....stess, continues: My husband is on his way back to Iraq this summer....so I would love to have your support while I inch back into my training, which I'm sure is going to be a challenge to say the least! Never mind a little humiliating to be back so far....after achieving so much!

Thanks to all of you....and I would covet any and all support from here on out...I ran yesterday morning for the first time in many - many months.....but I have and will not give up.
