Hey,
Everyone knows about the triple, quintiple, etc ironman.
Ultraman being one of them. Has anyone ever attempted this?
How would you train for something like this? I'm sure you dont need to be a professional.

Check out usaultratri.com
ultramanlive.com

They (USA Ultratri) do a double and triple...some links on their site to really long stuff.
The Ultraman Champs in Hawaii is more like a three day stage race while the the double and triple have time limits and a cut off.
Anyone can sign on for these but Ultraman is invitation only.
I have had the double in my sights for several years but realized last year my training was lacking. The Double is on the scope for 2007 and I'm saving for the entry fee.

Anton you're link is missing a couple of letters

http://www.usaultratri.com

And can I just add...

My first reaction was why would anyone want to do that!

But it's only over in Virginia, and that would be quite an accomplishment.

Thanks Jamie...fixed. The D and T are about an Hour from me. I know the course...but its loops of course as you can't be out riding on unprotected roads in the dark. I have a friend who did the double and he has provided loads of advice. I know my limits and know it is within my abilities...

Anton - where is this race in VA? I grew up in Charlottesville, VA and it sounds like it may be close by (there is a Lake Anna not too far from Charlottesville).

That is pretty interesting challenge. But the loops are so short. Keeping track would be a pain. How do they track your progress especially on the swim. I have a hard time keeping track of how many laps I do in the pool!

The race is at Lake Anna.
They have very diligent lap counters but you also have to accept responsibility for taking care of that yourself.
It's funny...you get up above the Marathon or Ironman or Randonneur..there is alot less hand holding to help you get through an event. It's assumed you are capable enough to be there and can handle anything that gets tossed your way.

My first reaction was like Jamie's, why?

but then I said that about Ironman twenty years ago too.

A friend of mine just got back a few weeks ago from the race this year. He attempted the double. Unfortunately he did not finish due to hypothermia during the bike section. He said it was "Crazy blowing rain" and low 50 degree temps. You have to understand that this guy is a 2 time finisher of Badwater and multiple 24 hour ultras. He is tough. He said he was in awe though of the athletes that were there. While he explained the conditions to be horrible, he was impressed with the support and organization of the event. He also said that there were some athletes just riding right along chit chatting like nothing was wrong. Apparently they had better gear.

Heard the conditions were bad from a friend of mine...Last year was similar. Too bad your friend had a less the stellar day...but as an ultrarunners and endurance athletes we know that previous accomplishments are no guarantee of success and the hard are easily humbled. There are always things beyond our control. Perhaps I'll see him there next year!

Anton may be the missing link - there is a half, full, double IM distance and powerman distance du as well as ultra-running events all in the same place/weekend on the south shore of Quebec City in July.
see triathlon-levis.com for more information.

for me there is definitely a place to draw a line with this endurance thing...ironman, if I ever get there, would be more than enough!

after that, it seems like clinical obsession because the training time would be so overwhelming you'd have to live alone on a island with a full staff to feed and clean you in order to have enough time to train...

Or at least have so many sponsors to pay for you to eat, breathe, sleep tri and ultra running. I'd do it if it ever became available.
