Mountain Bike for off season training?

I'm in the same boat as you - I ride my mountain bike in the off-season, but definitely didn't want to spend a lot of money on it (ans also had limited knowlegdge of mtn. bikes going into it). I ended up getting a Giant from my LBS - only front suspension. I've never ridden a full suspension mtn. bike and don't think you would need one unless you were getting into racing, etc. I did do the 24-Hour race in GA last year with a team and rode my hardtail bike with no problems.
Someone in your local bike shop can give you recommendations on brands - basically, it'll come down to what is a comfortable fit for you in your price range.

I am looking into a MB for off season rides. If I was going to just ride on gravel or dirt roads and maybe some trails what type, which kind of bike do you guys recommend? I know nothing about them, Ive strictly been a road/Tri guy from the beginning. Any help would be appreciated!
